Doug Matthews On Tennessee Vols 2015 Recruiting Class

Soooo... the one thing I have the biggest problem with regarding this podcast is... who do we cut ties with from now to NSD? He estimated 2-4 players. But then he identified that P, LS, QBs (JJ, QD), OL (Steward, J. Jones), WR (PW & probably VJ)... Who does that leave? We just took commitments from Picou, A. Smith, J. Bruce, & K. Oliver. I would be shocked if they cut ties with guys they just took commitments from...

I could guess J. Woods could be out, but who else? Rocky Reid? (no way) Dylan Jackson? Stephen Griffin? Cecil? Butcher? I don't really see any of these guys getting the boot, IMO.

Thus, I wonder if DM is just making an assumption about kids leaving???

If/when we add McKenzie, Richmond, Phillips, McGraw, and Jefferson, we would have the 2nd best recruiting class today per 247, only behind Alablahblah.

I got the impression the commitments were shaky on their side, not UT's side. In other words, they've verbally committed, but they may jump to other ships. It could be a little of both.

Matthews pretty much that 2-4 guys would likely not eventually sign, but that he would put the number at 3. He said if you looked at the list it would probably be pretty obvious to most. I hate to speculate, but when I look at our current commits and then consider who we seem to in on, I'd say Woods, Bruce and Stewart are the 3 most likely. This would be only from UTs perspective and obviously doesn't consider which higher rated players might decommit. Once we get verbals and a kid wants to be a Vol I hate to think of any of them not eventually being in the program.

Any of our current commits that seem shaky though? I can't think of anyone who seems like they might not want to be part of the team...

Don't agree with you on Zach Stewart...from either end

I can't claim to know in any direction about that. Some shaky guys stick, and sometimes solid guys bounce.

And sometimes people (me) say obvious things. :p

Could obviously be wrong on all 3 there Butchy. Those were just the 3 that jumped off the list to me. Like I said, hate to speculate on any of the currently committed recruits not being Vols at the end of the day.

Example(s) of Matthews being wrong? Chris Weatherd is the closest example I can think of and he's still not wrong about him yet.

Wasn't he wrong about the offensive coordinator he thought the Vols were going to hire back in '08? Crowton I believe, but not sure... may have been Trooper Taylor.

I know it's hard to find that third "obvious" choice...But Stewart was an early id and commit and he's done nothing but validate that early faith by CBJ...it would have to be someone twice as good to get his spot and I don't think that animal exists...Woods and Bruce I won't argue.

2008? 6 years ago? Point made

I remember that one because he seemed to be pretty certain that the hire had already been made and was only awaiting announcement.

I don't remember any mistakes he's made with regards to recruiting, but then again, I don't remember any other pointed information he's given about recruits.

I guess if you're in the game long enough you're bound to make a mistake at some point.

Hard to bat 1.000 when you're dealing with kids changing their minds...this latest info seems to be more dialed in with the OFFERING party.

Decommits happen every single year and to everyone. We are very far away from NSD. It's a guarantee that players on our current commit list will not sign with us. It's just reality.

I hear you; I'm just wondering if DM knows something or is just making the same kind of statement you just did.

He was wrong when he chose which school to attend. Other than that, he's been pretty accurate. He's still really close to Fulmer

No one called that.

Again, we are not going to find as solid a source about the Vols that is so willing to share information. I don't understand why he is criticized so much, but then so was Fulmer.

My guess is that his educated guess is much more educated (via direct information he gets from the staff and AD) than anybody else's "educated" guess on here.

The real question though is whether your guess as to Matthews educated guesses in relation to this board's educated guesses is educated or uneducated?

And there we have it - all summed up in an educated, uneducated guess.
