Dream Non-Conference Rivalies....

I think that brings on a debate.

I disagree that it's not as much about location, as it is about reputation.

I for instance think that it's great that we're playing Oklahoma. Why? Not because I think we need to recruit more in Oklahoma, but because recruits recognize Oklahoma as a respected brand in college football. We will be measured by how well we do against Oklahoma.

When a recruit sees us beat a "National Power" or even come close to beating a "National Power," then we automatically have something that is attention-garnering, and indicative of where we're heading.

If we have that, I dont' think it matters where we play. If we can establish that winning brand again, doors will open to recruit's homes in every single part of the country.

I agree. I guess I was just looking at the potential of us owning the region. But we already seem to do pretty well in Virginia and NC. The kids in those states seem to be very loyal to their home schools. I use to think Tenn kids hated staying at home until Butch got here now I think our kids like to stay home too. Which means we do not have to go as far to fill every spot in our class, just a few we like out of state.

I would want to play va tech. I live in Virginia and can't stand them. One of there fans argued they have more national championships than we do to my knowledge they have 0...

Here in the Tri Cities because of our border we have a lot of Hokie fans, but due to the huge disparity with UT fans they are pretty low key.

I'd like to see Tennessee play

UNC
NCSU
Virginia Tech
Virginia
Georgia Tech

These would be a great addition to the football schedule every year.

I would love a series with GT. I would have another game close to home and my best friend is a GT homer. Would make for some great smack talk.

I've always enjoyed games with Notre Dame and UCLA. Memphis and MTSU are good lower tier games. There's a lot of ACC schools I'd like to see us play too.

Trip to Oregon was fun last year too, maybe a series with Oregon St this time around though.

The logical choice is North Carolina...I think that would be a fun rivalry with a lot of history...I hope we play them every year.

I'd like to see:

Miami
Michigan
Penn State
Texas
Louisville
Ohio State
Southern Cal
Notre Dame
Oklahoma State
Syracuse
Clemson

Adding one of these teams every 3 years would still keep the Vols among the top 5 schedules in the country.

I don't want to see a random good team become a yearly rivalry. I want it to make sense and happen every year. Bring on VT or UNC. Nobody else makes any damn sense.

I definitely see the appeal.... the problem is I don't like our football program having a yearly rivalry with a school that is known for its basketball program. I worry it would have about the same national interest as UGA/GA Tech.

If we're going to do an OOC rivalry I would prefer it be against a football school, one big enough to generate the same kind of interest in the rivalry as UF/FSU.

Historically speaking, Georgia Tech.

It would be nice if we could get into a rotational with UNC, NCST, VT, and GT. Maybe even Clemson, WV and Duke. All but WV are ACC teams. All are relatively close to Knoxville.

And Air Force/Colorado/Colorado State rotational, so I can see more games.

We could set up an 800 club where we play at least two teams every year with 800 wins: one would obviously be bama, then there is Mich, Neb, OK, osu, ND?

Or we could go with 100,000 plus stadium rotational: which would include: bama, aTm, ND, Mich, OSU?, UCLA, Penn St, etc.

As was mentioned earlier, I do think we should play Memphis and MTSU every other year to shore up recruiting, especially West TN.

And we need to play in Charlotte a lot too for recruiting.

Why do people keep talking about the "history" between UT/UNC?

Prior to the Music City Bowl, they hadn't played since 1961! Yes, prior to that they played on a regular basis but it's a little far-fetched to bring history into it when you'd need to be over 65 to remember them playing.

texas would be a great rivalry game. lots of similarity between the teams and a great history and tradition. it would not take much to make it interesting. i think both teams would love playing each other. Ohio State would be good too. Like the post on the first page they play no one, and are always ranked. Also they have a terrible record vs SEC teams, but it could change now that meyer is there.

That may have been logical years ago, playing a regional opponent doesn't get UT the same exposure as playing a team like UCLA, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio State or ND.

It's all about TV theses days, and UT needs to play at least one team a year that will get them the most exposure, playing North Carolina every year won't accomplish that.

As for the other other three non conference games, two should be pay day games at home, and the fourth should be against a team like MTSU or Memphis.

Boca, ole bud, history is events that occurred in the past. You need not be 65 years old to appreciate or know about it. Roman History is is about 20 centuries before you or me or anybody alive, but there it is. American History is just a few tiny centuries old, and we're required to know something about it as citizens, as we should. Sixty-five or not, there it is. Then there's University of Tennessee History which there'd be fewer dumb Vols fans if we all knew about it. Of course, there's the history of the Volunteers-Crimson Tide history, not to mention the GENERAL'S history to boot. Your age has naught to do with the ability to appreciate and be knowledgeable about history. Honest. There'd be a bit fewer stupid people if they really knew historical facts as opposed to historical fiction. Which may explain why humans keep making the same mistakes and fighting wars for the same dayum things. We refuse to learn from history. Witness the West's foot dragging on Putin's adventures in Urkaine. Repeating German's annexation policies is what it is. We never learn because we refuse to or are just too stupid to. 65 years old or not.

History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time; it illumines reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life and brings us tidings of antiquity.

Playing GT does nothing to help get the national exposure that Tennessee needs to compete at the highest level. However, it would be fun for the fans, and it could help especially if it's an event in the Georgia Dome like a few years ago when UT played NC State. But, playing GT for a two game series where each gets a home game does very little for national exposure. The biggest gain for UT is playing in Atlanta as it is a hotbed for top recruits.
