I know it's already been stated but I'll reiterate: Notre Dame. Notre Dame is every media outlet's golden boy; all this talk of exposure...if we beat the snot out of ND every other year, everybody in America would be buying orange.
I think Notre Dame, though, would right now be like the one team it'd be impossible to set up a yearly series with.
Not because of any sort of holier than thou attitude or anything, but there's going to be such little room left in their scheduling.
They now owe 5-6 games a year to ACC opponents (it's only 4 next year, but I believe part of that is so as to let them finish the Michigan game left under contract).
They still want to maintain a yearly rivalry with Purdue. Whether that's for history or in-state purposes, whatever, it's still there.
They'll never, ever, ever get rid of that Navy game; it means too much to the school, historically (and not simply as an easy win):
Notre Dame, like many colleges, faced severe financial difficulties during World War II. The US Navy made Notre Dame a training center and paid enough for usage of the facilities to keep the University afloat. Notre Dame has since extended an open invitation for Navy to play the Fighting Irish in football and considers the game annual repayment on a debt of honor. The series is marked by mutual respect, as evidenced by each team standing at attention during the playing of the other's alma mater after the game, a tradition that started in 2005.
And they now play USC (major rival) yearly as well as a yearly home and away versus Stanford (not sure if this is a rivalry for Stanford or both or just Notre Dame wanting to make sure it plays in California each season).
That takes up 9 games (or in one season's case, 10) right there.
Plus they seem to want to try to keep one more game open to rotate on old Big 10 rivals/other Big 10 teams (like rival Michigan State or teams like Northwestern...possibly because they're in Chicago).
So that means in their case, only about 2 (or even some years, 1) game spots would be left open on their schedule.
It just seems like it would be very difficult to convince any team to have one of those filled with another permanent rival (especially a major conference one).
Not that we couldn't set up a home and home or two with them down the road; I hope we do such and cream them.
