Dream Non-Conference Rivalies....

That may have been logical years ago, playing a regional opponent doesn't get UT the same exposure as playing a team like UCLA, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio State or ND.

It's all about TV theses days, and UT needs to play at least one team a year that will get them the most exposure, playing North Carolina every year won't accomplish that.

As for the other other three non conference games, two should be pay day games at home, and the fourth should be against a team like MTSU or Memphis.
MTSU or Memphis do absolutely nothing for our schedule...Playing UNC would draw a lot of interest from both fan bases...Plus it would get us more exposure into North Carolina for recruits...AS far as the other teams go why would we want to play OSU every year?...We have no rivalry with them at all...Notre dame I could see, or UCLA which would cost both schools a bundle just traveling back and forth...Nebraska could become a natural rival...Big Red vs the Big Orange.

Playing Tiger High helps with recruiting in the Memphis-West Tennessee area.

Unfortunately Texas doesn't seem to want to play Tex A&M anymore. It looks like Texas picked up the ball and left in a huff when A&M joined the SEC.

at some point you have to give the fans what they want. the fans want to let their hatred of A&M manifest itself on the gridiron

As an unwritten rule on a twelve game schedule, UT will only schedule one major non-conference game per season so they can play at least seven home games. Three of those must teams willing to come to Neyland for a paycheck, that's where MTSU or Memphis come in, most people get that if UT pays three teams per year to give UT seven home games, it might as well be an in state school, so the money doesn't leave the state. That's why I suggested either of them because they are both more competitive than UT-Martin, UTC, or Austin Peay.

Clemson, FSU and Georgia Tech will not happen. I have seen them mentioned several times in the thread but they all have existing heated in state SEC rivalries.

It's a shame if A&M doesn't use this mandate as the reason to restart that rivalry

A&M wanted to continue the rivalry; Texas pretty much said "bite me" in response.

(Same for Missouri and Kansas continuing their game.)

Yes, but they should never have ended the rivalry in the first place! Texas and A&M should always play. I think it's because Texas would have to play a tough 10 game schedule (9 Big12 and 1 SEC) yet Florida St, Clemson, Georgia Tech do it every year and haven't faired too bad.

No it's got nothing to do with Texas playing "a tough 10 game schedule." It was a screw you to A&M for leaving the conference.

I know it's already been stated but I'll reiterate: Notre Dame. Notre Dame is every media outlet's golden boy; all this talk of exposure...if we beat the snot out of ND every other year, everybody in America would be buying orange.

Louisville
Purdue
Notre Dame
Ohio State
FSU
UNC

ND,Purdue & Louisville if for no other reason than it would be close for me to go see the away games! lol

I think Notre Dame, though, would right now be like the one team it'd be impossible to set up a yearly series with.

Not because of any sort of holier than thou attitude or anything, but there's going to be such little room left in their scheduling.

They now owe 5-6 games a year to ACC opponents (it's only 4 next year, but I believe part of that is so as to let them finish the Michigan game left under contract).

They still want to maintain a yearly rivalry with Purdue. Whether that's for history or in-state purposes, whatever, it's still there.

They'll never, ever, ever get rid of that Navy game; it means too much to the school, historically (and not simply as an easy win):

Notre Dame, like many colleges, faced severe financial difficulties during World War II. The US Navy made Notre Dame a training center and paid enough for usage of the facilities to keep the University afloat. Notre Dame has since extended an open invitation for Navy to play the Fighting Irish in football and considers the game annual repayment on a debt of honor. The series is marked by mutual respect, as evidenced by each team standing at attention during the playing of the other's alma mater after the game, a tradition that started in 2005.

And they now play USC (major rival) yearly as well as a yearly home and away versus Stanford (not sure if this is a rivalry for Stanford or both or just Notre Dame wanting to make sure it plays in California each season).

That takes up 9 games (or in one season's case, 10) right there.

Plus they seem to want to try to keep one more game open to rotate on old Big 10 rivals/other Big 10 teams (like rival Michigan State or teams like Northwestern...possibly because they're in Chicago).

So that means in their case, only about 2 (or even some years, 1) game spots would be left open on their schedule.

It just seems like it would be very difficult to convince any team to have one of those filled with another permanent rival (especially a major conference one).

Not that we couldn't set up a home and home or two with them down the road; I hope we do such and cream them. :)

Resentment for leaving the Big 12 fold.

Pretty much. A&M stretched out a hand and Texas spat on it.

Missouri tried the same with Kansas (actually, their coach still talks about renewing that series) and KU - being a member of Texas's conference - followed the Longhorn's example.

I think a fair portion of their fans though are still content letting that hatred manifest itself in a "you're not worth our time" way.

Same as KU's fans to Missouri over the Border War.

I think will eventually win out. they'll realize how much revenue they're letting slip through their fingers and cave in 2 or years down the road.

More than 2.

Texas rebuked the last attempt saying their schedule's full until...I think it was either 2018 or sometime in the 2020s.

Hopefully, though, both Texas AND Kansas will realize - sooner rather than later - that they're both better off playing their respective rivals...I agree it will eventually happen, when is the question though.

You might be right. But for something that doesn't even have a mouth, money talks real loud.

You're giving it too much credit at this point over people with power feeling spited/spurned by another's actions.

It will get there/back to where it needs to be...but it's going to be a while.

1.) Clemson (Battle of the Orange)
2.) Texas (Battle for UT)
3.) Virginia Tech

I think with the new 2016 rules these games could really happen. I'm already excited about "The Battle @ Bristol"
