East Tennessee Weather

Don't we have an actual winter thread?

I think there is, but I've mainly focused on weather in Tennessee (mostly the eastern half). I'll probably start expanding my forecasting in the future, but I'm content with the state I live in for now.

P.S. Speaking of which, I'll include middle and west Tennessee in my winter weather outlook from now on.

Update on the drought conditions:

The Central Valley (Knoxville and surrounding areas) is now in the Severe Drought category.

Much of the Southern Valley is in the Extreme Drought category, with Chattanooga being in the worst drought category, Exceptional.

The way this summer has been you're likely looking at a long, slow cool down. I wouldn't be surprised at mid 70's for Halloween if I'm being honest.

Update: It'll be 82 degrees on Halloween night at 5pm, only dropping to 77 by 7pm and 72 by 9pm.

Just a few more days until I come out with my 2016-2017 Winter Weather Outlook. I'll do East Tennessee on November 1st, then Middle and West Tennessee on the 2nd.

In the meantime, Matt Hinkin from WATE 6 news has come out with his outlook for this winter:

We’ve had a dry summer and I expect that trend to continue through fall and into winter. Temperatures will remain at or slightly above average with limited moisture.

East Tennessee will have better opportunities for snow late in winter as the drought lightens it’s grip. The average annual snowfall for Knoxville is 6.4 inches. I’m predicting 5-9 inches in Knoxville from a few small events.

I predict, the Plateau, which stands at about 2,800 feet will see between 10 to 15 inches of snowfall. On average they typically receive about twelve inches.

The Smokies, which sit at a much higher elevation, will see somewhere between 12 inches at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to 90 inches on Mt. LeConte.

About what I expected for this winter to be honest. This has been a very hot and extremely dry summer and the trend has continued into fall.

Guess we aren't having winter this year?

Nope, it's cancelled, lol. Summer will continue.

Sorry about that, guys. I was busy with something. Here's my thoughts on this winter:

I think this will be an average year for snowfall. Overall, we'll see slightly warmer than average temperatures (That doesn't mean there won't be any cold weather).

Projected snowfall amounts by area:

Valley: 6-9 inches
Plateau: 12-15 inches
Mountains: 12-90 inches (the higher elevation you are the more snow)

There's a lot more uncertainty with this winter than the previous one.

I always keep my fingers crossed for 3 or 4 "good" snows. I'm in a house with a wood fireplace and wood stove so I'm pretty excited about it.

The all night snow watches in this thread are great.
