Drought update:

Don't think "dryer than a popcorn fart" would even be appropriate for how dry its been.

Any long term explanation for the lack of precipitation we've been having?

We drove down to Atlanta last weekend for the Adele concert. About halfway there was a huge fire up on a ridge. The next time I turned to look I saw a helicopter making a water drop. You'd have thought we were in California or something.

Strong high pressure hasn't been moved by any of the weak low pressure systems coming our way. Basically zaps all the systems of moisture because it's so strong.

Probably won't have much affect on your grass if it's still growing, mostly only ornamental plants. The low is only 37 tonight.

Not really wearher related...wife just took this picture of the moon. Is that Mars underneath?

Not entirely sure but I highly recommend an app called "Night Sky" for your phone, it's free! It's very cool as after you load the app you just hold the phone up to the sky and it'll identify in real time what you are looking at as well as show you where other celestial bodies are.

Thanks, Coug.

David Aldrich has come out with his Winter Weather Outlook. Here's some highlights:

1. He does mention the weak La Nina, but he doesn't feel that it will be a huge driving factor in our weather. He believes that the negative arctic oscillation will be a bigger factor for this winter.

2. He said that this will be a front loaded winter in terms of temperatures, meaning that December will be the coldest month of the season. He's thinking 3 degrees below normal for December, near normal temperatures for January, and Slightly below normal Temps (between 0 and 1 degree below normal) for February and March.

3. His thoughts on snowfall totals are as follows:

Valley: 7-11 inches
Plateau: 12-16 inches
Mountains (Areas higher up in elevation than Gatlinburg): 55-90 inches

Drought update:

The Extreme Drought area now covers most of East Tennessee except Northeast TN. The Exceptional Drought area is gradually expanding north and east. We badly need rain.

Hopefully that rain chance comes to fruition next week. Even if its a .5 inch in total, that better than the nothing we have been getting.

We've lucked out the last couple days with a few passing showers but we need a good several hour soaker to help with the fires and drought.
