These threads all started with Smoke talking about the RECENT jump in oil prices. During that time, prices went up about 25 cents per gallon -- they have since returned to "Pre-Smoke freak-out" levels.

If every up deserves criticism then every down merits praise (according to Smoke logic)

Oh I see. Well better get ready for more criticism with summer and more praise before mid term elections.

Economy is fine. Gas prices are driven by the world market now, and there is very little that can be done other than an increase in supply which also has a limited effect due to the price of refining oil.

The job market will continue to be affected by technological shifts, and blue collar workers will continue feeling the strain of working under the thumb of large corporations. The US job market will be at full employment for quite sometime. Ask some of the Europeans with economic models worshipped by the Democrats how they feel about their 10% unemployment rates.

typical republican response, i still feel though i will be right on this. i don't believe supply and demand anymore on oil it doesn't make any sense. any rumor, sends oil rising. i don't buy it.

China's consumption has nothing to do with the rise in oil prices? Instability in the middle east has never caused oil prices to rise? Iran has had nuclear capabilities before?

It's given that there are a lot of factors when it comes to the price of oil, but in my opinion, the war in Iraq is our main problem right now when it comes to gas prices.

a rise of this caliber hell no. we have had hurricanes before W prices never rose. there is always something going on in the middle east i don't remember gas being $3 a gallon. i never remember it spiking 2 dollars in one night. i'm not buying it. it doesn't make any sense. :banghead:

That is a factor for sure, but do not discount the price of refining when it comes to supply and demand.

It's definitely a factor, just like Iran, increased consumption by Russia and China, Hurricanes, lack of refining capacity in the US, the fact that OPEC is a cartel, etc, etc, etc.

hurricane katrina, 9/11, pretty much from now on anytime a hurricane hits. :banghead:

I doubt that. Katrina and Greta following the same path and striking as close together as they did was a major anomaly.

One of the most interesting new shows on Discovery is "Oil, Sweat, and Rigs". It shows the cost of repairing those Gulf Coast oil rigs. Pretty interesting. If you watch for any amount of time it is very easy to see how much a hurricane in the Gulf affects the ability to access and refine oil. I highly recommend it.

GAVOL, so you don't think the first hurricane that hits the gulf this year won't push gas to $4 a gallon.

Who knows? I'm just saying that it can't be discounted how severe last year's hurricane season was.

Why has May been cooler than normal this year? I can get used to that :p

Because global warming is slowly but surely changing our seasons and our weather patterns. My guess is that September and October will be even warmer this year.
