Based on how Milton looked after Hooker went down and including the Clemson game, who exactly was going to come here for a year given that Nico is the heir apparent next season? You want Heupel to kidnap a QB? I can't blame him for thinking the light had come on for Milton. Heck, almost everyone on this board was talking about him being a top 10 draft choice, super arm and how he was going to torch opposing secondaries. This year was always going to be a challenge for Heupel. Injuries only increased the level of difficulty. Folks better prepare for next season not being as successful even with Nico. We will likely be a lot younger and inexperienced. Combine that with a much more difficult schedule and 7 wins looks to be our ceiling next year. If we kill it in the portal and fill our needs, that would change the perspective, but right now, I'm not sure we pull an FSU and clean up like they did.
Guys transfer for 1 year stints all the time. All of the rest of this is one big excuse.

As far as play calling goes, (I 100% agree the talent is not what we need to run this offense to it’s full potential) the most deflating thing is that whoever is calling the plays, (and this even includes the prior 2 years) never runs an extension to some of those plays we run all the time.

Example: those screen out to the flats-there is always a guy out there blocking as the others drops behind the LOS for the catch. Why haven’t they, after running it several times, release that blocker after both DB’s come up to stop the play…that guy should be running wide open down the field. Look at the pictures below. Now this ends up a run, but look at pre snap and at the snap. Where is the safety at the snap and where is his eyes?

Why couldn’t that blocker chip, release and run as hard as he can and be all alone with at least a 10 yard head start?IMG_3262.pngIMG_3263.png

You call it an excuse when, in fact, it's just reality. Those guys transfer in with the expectation of starting...day one. No way they'd buy that they have a clean path to the starting job under the circumstances.

Message got cut off. Why were we super aggressive last year, but this year we are seeing all of these runs up the middle, screen passes behind the LOS, crazy options that don’t make any sense. Before you say Hooker, Hyatt, blah blah, I think Joe has performed better with aggressive play calling at a faster tempo. I know the first series is scripted, but why can’t the coaches keep ‘scripting’ / calling plays for him if that works best for him? Are these stupid play calls making things worse for Joe? Perhaps the problem is that all plays are a read option and it’s up to Joe to decide whether to run or pass and he’s the one choosing the option? If so , why can’t the coaches just give him the play instead of making him process more than he needs to?
Well the runs up the middle are crucial to being able to run off tempo and off tackle in this offense. Maybe you just missed that last year. As long as we get 8+ yards a third of the time, we’re not going to worry about getting stopped at the line, and keep running it.

The lack of downfield passes is a function of inadequate pass protection, lack of mobility “within” the pocket, and drops (which I think were more of an unforeseen issue). The line is what it is. Joes taught to move those feet, if he doesn’t that’s on him. The drops I don’t have an answer for. Just need to be better.

They do that, maybe not often enough. It has garnered some big plays this season and in the past. Maybe because the pass protection can’t hold up long enough and they don’t want to lose their starting and future starting qb to an avoidable injury.

All good points being made here. Before the season, I thought we needed an improved defense and just a small decline in offense. We got the first part, but the offense is significantly below last year which has hurt the defense because they stay on the field constantly.

And then injuries have made both sides worse as the season has gone on.

If they do it, it’s clearly not often enough, just look how wide open it is just in that one instance. The ball is held quite often much longer than it would take to run that play. That’s a fake, one step drop, and let it fly. Of course the QB has to put the proper air under it for it to work….which comes back to the real issue.

I don’t know if the timing of that is exactly what you think it is but I get what you’re getting at. Can’t do that too often though. They need to bite on the fake for that to work or it’s an easy interception. So the more you do it the higher risk play it is and less likely to be there when you want to take advantage of it. One sets up the other, not the other way around.

1) opponents have played defense different vs Tennessee this year than last year. Majority of the game, opponents play 2 or 3 deep to prevent the long pass. The box has been a mixture or 5 and 6 man boxes all year. Strong opponents such as Ala, Mizzou and even Florida have controlled the run game with that.
2) reduction in consistentcy in the passing game with QB and Wr production being below last year. Joe's issues wth accuracy in the intermediate game and drops by receivers has hurt.

Point I was really making wasn’t only that particular play. There is many things we do that looks like they could be setting up something and never goes back to it. That’s all I was saying. Not to do that 1 play more often.

Conceding the lack of talent compared to last year, esp' at QB, but we do have decent running backs. So why , after you've run it up the middle and got stuffed on 1st down for the umpteenth time and every one in the stands knows what is coming, why not let our running backs go out to the right or left , just one time ? We may not have the talent, but that doesn't mean we have to run the same plays, to become so predictable that we are easy to defend.

I think Heupel has struggled with what to do with Milton all year. It was obvious even with the first game against Virginia. Frankly I don’t think the coaches did him any favors. Our OL and WR definitely took a step back however so can’t put that on Joe. Wish we would use TE more often.

If we end up 8-4 and win a bowl game that is decent. The manner in which we were dominated by Florida, Missouri and Bama in the 2nd half is what is disappointing. Fell apart in all three.
