Edward Snowden: American Hero

Hmm... just out of curiosity, would a "classified program to kill a race of people in this country" be legal?

You know, legal... like I specified when I referenced the legality of the program?

No?

Oh, okay. So your statement makes no sense. Alright. Carry on then.

What in the Constitution gives them the legal authority to do this?

So the legal part is your hang up. Good job, because Lord knows being legal is what we should strive for. Legally owning slaves was a grand idea. Too bad for those anti- heroic people that turned the tide on that.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Wait... slavery was a classified NSA program? I'm learning something from you every minute!

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

An act was passed. That tells you nothing about whether the act is carried out legally. But it is classified, so you'd never know if things were executed to the letter of the law. Vicious cycle that whole legal/classified deal creates.

It was legal, therefore it was all good in your eyes.

So not only is notabed a Vandy trolling idiot, he's a regular freedom-hating idiot as well. With exceptionally poor taste in uniforms and schools.

Never once did I say anything about any desire to maintain all current laws in the land and that nothing permitted or prohibited in the United States is in need of changing.

But, really, that sure is a great strawman to utilize when you've got nothing else to go on!

This circles back to the fact that Edward leaked classified information regarding a legal NSA program. Whether or not the program itself is "all good" in my eyes is irrelevant; leaking classified information about a legal program doesn't deserve a medal, but rather a cold jail cell.

That does not give them the blanket authority to collect information on all US citizens. This whole thing is illegal.

Acquiring incidental information about Americans whilst targeting foreign subjects is not, I repeat, illegal. Try again.

So not only is notabed a Vandy trolling idiot, he's a regular freedom-hating idiot as well. With exceptionally poor taste in uniforms and schools.

I'm not a Vandy fan; I'm truly sorry that you can't deal with the realities regarding the current state of the Tennessee and Vanderbilt football programs or Vanderbilt's academic superiority to UT, but that's your burden to bear. However, I love that being opposed to the release of classified information detailing a legal NSA program makes me a "freedom-hating idiot."

Great reach.

You deserve the oppression that you are so vehemently lobbying for.

The problem is he shares the viewpoint of a wide swath of Americans. People like Mr. notabed22 are the problem with this country, and those morons are going to bring the rest of us down with them.

Would either of you be so kind as to point out where, exactly, I opined on the PRISM program? I've certainly laid out my feelings regarding the leaking of classified information pertaining to a legal NSA program but, to my knowledge, never spoke about the PRISM program further than to point out its legality.

Just wondering because, honestly, it'd be a real shame for you to stand there and talk about me "deserving" the "oppression" for which I am "vehemently lobbying" and complain that "people" like me are "the problem with this country" and "going to bring the rest of 'us' down" without knowing how I feel or anything. But, of course, I'm sure that's not the case.

Collecting information on individuals without a warrant or probable cause is a violation of the 4th Amendment and should definitely be illegal. The fact that some judge signed off on this program behind closed doors and made it "legal" just adds an extra dimension of shadiness.

Snoweden is a hero for blowing the lid off of a program that infringed upon one of our guaranteed rights. You're a tool.

So you do agree that he's a hero for leaking, shady or not, legal classified government documents.

Are all of you standards this low, or does it only apply to the designation of heroes? I'm moderately worried about how you'd react if a person behaved so heroically as to pick up something you dropped.

Still will be a hero.

People need to let go of this fantasy that you can be protected your entire life. It is life, bad things are going to happen.

I don't have that fantasy, but I do have experience in this fight and know the people doing this work. They are Americans who care about freedom as much as the rest of us. Of course this program will not be as effective in the future do to the disclosure so their job willbe much harder.

You can't possibly speak for all these people as to how much they care about freedom. Not even close.

You're guaranteed your metadata?

Why should it be gathered and interpreted secretly by the federal gov't without my consent?

I am totally guaranteed protection from the details of my life being used as the fire-stoking chopwood for some McCarthy-esque government paranoia. I am totally guaranteed protection from having this information used against me. I don't think our gov't realizes this.

I would also say that it was smart of him to come forward. If he stayed quiet they could kill him and no one would know the difference.
