Just anecdotal and a gut feeling on my part, but wouldn't be the first time I was wrong lol. But the chatter and outreach among people I know that are active in the Democratic party started pushing this race hard a couple of weeks ago. That means they had internal numbers showing Beasley was overperforming expectations.
