Who's Laughing Now, Elon? Chinese Automaker BYD Will Overtake Tesla as World's Leading EV Maker next month (despite Musk SNICKERING at the firm in decade-old clip) - and Experts Warn Demand For Electric Cars Is Slowing

Chinese automaker BYD is poised to overtake Tesla as the most popular electric car manufacturer in the world, new analysis shows.

The gap between the two giants has been steadily closing in recent years, with Tesla selling just 3,456 more EVs than BYD in the last financial quarter.

It is no doubt embarrassing news for Tesla founder Elon Musk who once famously snickered at BYD's cars during a 2011 appearance on Bloomberg Television. Experts speculate BYD could overtake the American automaker early next year.

But it comes as demand for electric vehicles is starting to wane generally, as US car dealers complain vehicles are piling up unsold on their lots.

BYD made 1.5B USD in 2022.

Tesla's market cap went up by $15 billion during the first 20 mins of trading today...
you think China couldbreak into the US market..maybe with production and REM advantages?
I would hope not and dont think the Far East historical success is applicable.

How long has it taken Kia and Hyundai to get share in the US and overcome perceived quality issues?

And the Koreans are known much more for quality products than the Chinese.

Market share happened in my lifetime, but like you said quality is key. Say they did turn the corner, I was just wondering if they could overcome cultural aversions. I really cannot think of any big ticket consumer products fron China.

Krystal's used to sell a lot of "burgers" back in the day. Didn't mean they weren't crap.

Reuters Investigation: Elon Musk’s Tesla Blames Customers for Its Defective Parts

A recent investigation by Reuters has unearthed critical issues with Tesla’s handling of part failures, revealing a pattern of blaming customers despite longstanding awareness of defects.

Reuters recently reported on its extensive investigation of Tesla based on a troubling pattern of shifting blame for defective parts to the buyers of Elon Musk’s electric vehicles. Customers have reported serious issues such as wheels detaching while driving, suspensions collapsing on new vehicles, and axles breaking during acceleration. These problems, reported by tens of thousands of customers, were seen across various Tesla models worldwide, dating back at least seven years. To make these defects worse, the investigation reveals that Tesla has demonstrated a pattern of blaming customers for its own problems.

One notable case involved Shreyansh Jain, whose Tesla Model Y’s front-right suspension collapsed with just 115 miles on the odometer. The incident, which occurred a day after he bought the car, required a costly repair that Tesla refused to cover, attributing it to “prior” suspension damage. Despite Tesla’s claims, documents and interviews have revealed that the company had tracked these “flaws” and “failures” for years but had consistently blamed drivers for vehicle “abuse.”

The investigation uncovered persistent issues with suspension connections, such as upper and lower control arms and fore and aft links, as well as more complex components like half shafts and steering racks. These failures, often in relatively new vehicles, have led to dangerous situations and near accidents. At least 11 drivers reported crashes caused by failures in the suspension, steering, or wheel assembly between 2018 and 2021.

Both sides are probably right. Tesla designed and produced a sedan, unfortunately they don’t limit the torque enough from the motors so typical sedan engineering doesn’t apply when every red light is an opportunity to show everybody how quick you are off the line ( @kiddiedoc )
I had a buddy in HS that put a 351 V8 in a mustang born with a straight 6, could understand why he kept restoring clutch’s and broke an axle

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signs law to Safeguard State From EV Requirements

Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) signed a new law on Thursday that safeguards Ohio from multiple vehicle requirements, including prohibiting a state agency from adopting the California emission standards for motor vehicles.

The new law stops the state from signing on to or taking steps to mandate emissions standards through emergency protocols established in the Clean Air Act of 1970. However, the law is controversial because it also allows natural gas companies to place more costs on consumers via a last-minute amendment.

Sens. Blumenthal and Markey Call For Further Tesla Recalls

Sens. Edward Markey (D-MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) wrote a letter to Tesla CEO Elon Musk to address the "substandard quality of its vehicles."

The letter concerns the steering control and suspension in some of its vehicles that were recalled in China back in 2020. However, a similar recall over these components hasn't occurred in the U.S.

"We write with extreme concern following recent reporting about Tesla’s knowledge of safety flaws in its vehicles and concealment of the causes of these flaws from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration," the letter reads.

Cargo Ship Carrying Burning Lithium Ion Batteries Reaches Alaska but is Kept Offshore amid frantic battle to extinguish the blaze as crew fears explosion

A large cargo ship carrying lithium batteries which caught on fire has reached Alaska but continues to be held two miles offshore while responders attempt to extinguish the blaze.

The 19-strong crew managed to make it to shore with no injuries reported, according to the US Coast Guard.

The Genius Star XI was carrying a load of lithium-ion batteries across the Pacific Ocean, from Vietnam to San Diego when the cargo caught on fire, the guard's Alaska district said in a release.

The fire started on Christmas Day in cargo hold No. 1, a spokesperson for ship owner Wisdom Marine Group said.

The crew worked quickly to release carbon dioxide into the hold and sealed it over to avoid a potential explosion.

They then alerted the the Coast Guard early Thursday morning who diverted the 125-meter cargo ship to Dutch Harbor, one of the nation's busiest fishing ports located in Unalaska, an Aleutian Islands community about 1,287 kilometers southwest of Anchorage.

Embattled EV Manufacturer’s Stock Dives After Disappointing Quarterly Numbers

Rivian, a company that specializes in manufacturing high-end electric vehicles (EVs), posted underwhelming results for 2023’s fourth quarter, prompting its stock to fall on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

The company missed market estimates for deliveries in the fourth quarter amid stiff competition in the EV industry and a high interest environment, with its deliveries miss prompting the company’s stock to lose approximately 10% of its value as of Tuesday morning, according to Reuters and data from Google Finance. The company went public in November 2021 with an initial public offering price of $78 per share, but its stock now trades for about $21 per share.

Rivian delivered 13,972 EVs in the fourth quarter through Dec. 31, a number that is 10% lower than its deliveries executed during the prior quarter, according to Reuters. Market analysts anticipated that the company would be able to deliver more than 14,400 EVs in the quarter.

I can't find anything more than opinion pieces on this. Just because Medicare and EV Credits are in the same bill doesn't mean the funds are inter-dependent. Seems like a slippery slope argument to me.
Just another hidden tax on retired people on medicare!

Ummm, this was the plan all along since Inflation Reduction Act was passed through reconciliation process. The savings from Rx drugs, corporate minimum tax increase and stock buyback tax was to pay for clean energy tax credits/provisions....

You can argue if this is good policy but the Dems were absolutely transparent on what the tax increases/Rx savings was going to be spent on.

And Trump had pay-fors and revenue raisers in TCJA (also passed through Reconciliation process).

What were the major revenue raisers that were cross appropriated?
