A US woman has fatally shot a man who opened fire on a crowd of people with a semi-automatic rifle in Charleston, West Virginia.
Dennis Butler, a 37-year-old with an extensive criminal history, was killed after he targeted a group of around 40 people attending a birthday party.
Police spokesman Tony Hazelett said the woman's quick reaction saved lives and may have prevented a mass shooting.
It comes amid a national debate over guns after a school shooting in Texas.

Butler had driven by the area earlier on Wednesday evening when he was warned to slow down because children were playing.
He returned armed with an AR-15-type rifle and opened fire from his vehicle on the birthday-graduation party outside the apartment complex in the city.
Mr Hazelett told a news conference that the woman who fired back did not have any law enforcement background. She has not been identified.
"She's just a member of the community who was carrying her weapon lawfully," he said. "And instead of running from the threat she engaged with the threat and saved several lives."
The woman remained at the scene after the shooting, and is co-operating with investigators.
Charges will not be filed against her, police added.
Butler was found dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Mr Hazelett said it is not yet clear how Butler obtained the weapon - which he was not legally allowed to carry as a convicted felon.
The shooting comes after a teenage gunman killed 21 people at a Texas primary school with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle that had been purchased legally.
The attack, America's worst school shooting in a decade, reignited the debate over private gun ownership, which is enshrined in the US Constitution.

Something tells me they know her name but don’t want to tell you

They want ratings. Just like Fox. Thats why they love Trump so much. Trump = chaos = ratings. America be damned.
Good news gets ratings too. You can’t tell me that America doesn’t want to hear about this guy, the woman that killed the shooter back in May and many many other stories that happened just like this every single year.

I’ll tell you the real reason they don’t report on it. It’s because they can’t contradict themselves by telling you “guns are the devil” one day and then report on how a gun saved lives the next. It doesn’t fit the narrative that the AR-15 operates itself and goes on killing sprees. Reporting the good side of guns is admitting that the real weapon is made of flesh and bone. Not steel and polymer.

And people who lose their temper will kill at a higher clip that simply resort to fisticuffs. More guns equals more death.

Weird you keep saying this despite the obvious data. There's no correlation between gun ownership and homicide. White Americans have more guns than the rest of the world, and yet extremely low homicide rates. States with the toughest gun control laws have some of the highest rates of homicide (Maryland being a prime example). And there's no correlation between gun ownership and homicide on a state level.

Dating between a conservative and a liberal isn’t easy but is possible with some strong boundaries. Still don’t know how James Carville and Mary Matalin make it work. It proves you can think someone is dead wrong but still respect them. We need more of that

Carville is a Clinton crony and Matalin is a Bush crony. Not nearly as much difference as you might think.

You’re arguing with someone who has specifically gone out of their way to highlight their affinity/affiliation with Asheville. Their news is kind of limited to what fits on a Subaru bumper sticker.

Terra firma Submergence!

So, there's a story that goes with this. Warning: It's right on the line of TLDR to get the details in...

I know the base well. Stationed there from '93-'96 as an MP. Then went to the USS Tennessee for my final sea tour. Retired on a Friday, and started at the S.O. on Monday. My S.O. has concurrent jurisdiction on the base.

Now, they have DoD Police and only a few MP's (K-9, etc.). Kindler, gentler Navy. We still go there, as DoD Police do not have arrest powers; they can only detain civilians. So if it involves an arrest, we get called.

Saturday, I worked day shift. That gate is closed on weekends. So I pull up, get out, and take a couple of pics of the Bancroft display. The sail (the part that sticks up) was actually cut off of the sub. The rest is a concrete form. So I take my pics, then drive down to the gate to turn around. There's a DoD Police SUV sitting at the gate on the inside, and the driver is looking at me, so I park, get out, and walk over to the gate fence. Here's the conversation:

DoD: "Everything okay?"
Me: "Yessir, but we had a report of a stolen sub out of St. Simons Marina, and I was just making sure that wasn't it."
DoD: "No s**t! A civilian sub?"
Me: ..................
DoD: "Dang, man, you almost had me there."

This is why every few months I get called into my Captain's office, because someone tee'd it up for me, and I just didn't have the foresight to not take a swing...

Y'all be safe out there. Go Vols.
