My advice. Keep the band and engagement ring the same metal. I got a platinum engagement ring and a gold band and the two different metals intract and sometimes cause a rash on my wife's finger

Thank you. My girlfriend doesn't really like gold much. So, white gold and platinum are basically my options.

Gold is naturally yellow. White gold is gold with silver mixed in to make it white. (Keeping it simple here, it's more complex than that)

A white gold band plus a platnium engagement ring can interact and cause skin irritation. Gold is also softer than platnium so it scratches and loses a little bit of luster over time

I bought my wife's ring at Markmans on Kingston pike, right across from PF Changs. They were my favorite place to work with. I went to just about every damn jewelry store in Knoxville. Good luck.

However, Bearcat gave you the best advice. I've been married. It's overrated.

We looked a few different places. Happened to find a ring she really liked at Kay in East Towne. It was a custom ring that they just happened to have and wasn't a catalog ring, which she really liked because it meant no one else has that ring. Put a better (not bigger) diamond in the center and was good to go.

Also kudos to you for saving up for it. I took a loan out on myself, from my savings and then paid myself back with interest.

I just graduated from UT in May and have been with my girlfriend for four and a half years. She graduates next May, and it's time that we went engagement ring shopping. I need some advice regarding places in the knoxville area to go to and what I should be looking for in a diamond. I have a budget of about $3000 (with some flexibilty if it's something she really wants). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Craigslist.

I hadn't really thought about going to the jewelry stores in the mall but I may give them a shot as well.

And thanks for the kudos. Before I graduated, I read like 5 financial advice books to make sure I knew what I needed to do once I got a job and started getting paid regulary. (I had 3 internships for the summers between each year in college.)
