Amen.

And like KD says in the next post. Don't get hung up on looking at stones through a jewler's glass and judging clarity. Get the best eye quality diamond within your budget and she'll love it. I'd also recommend a small jewelry store and avoiding anybody you've ever seen advertise nationally. They tend to be glorified finance companies fronting as a jewelry store.

I'd second that. The smaller places usually started to be pretty negotiable when I mentioned I was paying cash.

I would be okay with selling ours and getting tats, but I designed my wife's and she said the notion was so special that she would hate to let it go.

Years ago, my mom worked with a lady whose husband bought her wedding set at Service Mechandise (some of you aren't old enough to remember that store.) He paid $1,500. A year later they had them appraised for insurance purposes....$3,800.00.

Oh man, I totally forgot about Service Merchandise.

I may bought Grannies first wedding set with S & H Green Stamps. I don't want to tell you what they appraised for a year later..:)

Best of luck. Marriage is a wonderful thing. Remember, don't worry about the size or price of the ring now. You can always upgrade to something nicer later on for anniversaries, etc. Don't go into debt over a wedding ring.

Thank you for the advice. I don't plan to go into debt over the ring as I have the cash saved up to pay for it. Also, I have already talked with her about getting something nicer later on and saving money to buy a house.

It's easy to get caught up in diamond quality and the money involved, but your commitment and dedication of love and support are far more important. Marriage is about serving, and learning that early may be the greatest gift you can ever give each other.

If a ring is important to her, stay within your budget and pay in cash. Don't create a hardship by breaking the bank.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box. Ex: simple bands or ring finger tattoos in lieu of expensive metal and stones, give the cash to a worthy cause you both believe in. Promise that you will both always love each other, your family, and others with all of your hearts. Promise that you will give, especially when it hurts. That's the kind of stuff that counts.

Thank you for the advice on marriage, and while I appreciate the sentiment of a unique ring tattoo, she and I are both more traditional. She definitely wants a ring.

I will definetly take that into account. We went out looking yesterday, and I was disappointed that most of the places I had found that were small jewelry stores were closed on Sunday. With games being on Saturday and work during the week, it's hard to find time to go to the places that are only open during the week or limited hours on Saturday.

The night games the next 2 weeks might help.

Great that you're dealing with cash. VERY WISE (for many, many reasons).

If a $3,000 ring isn't enough, your with the wrong girl. Sounds like high maintenance if your already promising to buy something better down the line.

She's definitely not high maintenance. When we went looking, she wouldn't even look at rings that were outside the budget. She understands that a house is more important that the ring.
