Enjoy the Win

They're not releasing any details.

Which tells me all I need to know. Maymon is not coming back this year IMO.

If this team is to make the dance, they're going to need more consistent play out of Golden, McRae and Stokes. When one of those are off then McBee, Richardson, Edwards, Hall or even Yemi have to pick up the slack.

So far, this team doesn't have any losses to bad teams. The Xavier and Memphis St games are big for this team's confidence. I still want to see them win on the road though.

The next 3 games are huge.

If Tennessee could win the next 3 they put themselves in GREAT position for the dance, and they wouldn't have to win too many games on the road.

They have to beat Xavier. They aren't that good. They've lost to Candy at home and Wofford today.

Many guys are out there that can play ball and on all levels, which is why so many teams can compete with bigger schools. In hoops, one guy can take over or get hot and carry an entire team. There are more tall players now than ever. More slashers, more shooters, more dunkers. Just fewer that are taught or know the game and how its played.. There are many players that choose a small school due to many reasons over sharing time at a large school or getting lost in the rotation. You watch WC, and their ballhandling was better than ours at every position. Tight games are going to happen more than ever, across the board. It's been leaning that way for years. I don't have an issue with that.
Yes, happy with a W.
Walking it up, not moving on O, not cutting, and lack of ballhandling and spacing are fair game to analyze and be concerned with and are not fun to watch. I can watch a tough fought L. I won't like an L from standing around and lack of offensive effort and aggressiveness, which will happen soon.
Really don't think our boys get motion offense.
Martin needs to add a ton of set plays.
Motionless motion doesn't work, don't care who's running it.

I noticed the offense looked much better Friday when they were on the end in front of CCM.

Plus, I agree with you about set plays; especially when Golden is out getting a rest. With no real backup, they need to push the ball with Golden out and if they cant convert in transition go to a set play, hopefully to a hot hand. Nothing worse than seeing someone starting to heat up and then not touch the ball for the next 5 possessions.

I looked for the regulars thread, but can't find it, anyone watching Mizzou/Illinois?

Man, pressey is fun to watch, that's for sure. Sparty he's the kind of PG I envision you loving, he lives in the lane.

Could someone start a thread for those who only show up after a Vol loss, or a poorly played half, or anyone who questions Martin?

That would be for you right?

What about that poster yesterday who said we'd win by double digits and you said we wouldn't?

Some scores from around college basketball today:

Winthrop 74, Auburn 67 (@Auburn)
Southern 53, Texas A&M 51 (@A&M)
Indiana State 87, Ole Miss 85 (@Hawai'i)
Wofford 66, Xavier 65 (@Xavier)
Old Dominion 63, Virginia 61 (was ODU's 2nd win of the year)

And one from yesterday: MTSU 56, Vanderbilt 52

My point: the OP is dead right. These sorts of ugly games happen to everybody. And as these scores illustrate, they often result in losses. We've dodged them all so far. I am quite happy that this hasn't happened to us yet (knock on wood). Until today, I was worried about our team. And to an extent I still am. But now I feel very good that we've managed to win all the games we were supposed to win. Because that's more than can be said about many, many other teams.

I think we're simply a team that plays either up or down to its competition. As long as we don't have any Austin Peay-type losses like last year, I'm fine with it. Because we'll get some good wins that way. My fear is that there is a 15-point loss to an average team coming in which we look utterly hapless. That would worry me a lot.

It was a pretty good assumption since the Vols only had 4 points at the 10 minute mark.

I hope UT wins every game, but I don't like Martin's style of play. A 22-18 halftime score is boring.

Defense is stellar though. Ask the lakers offense isn't everything.

Uconn beat Butler 53-41 in what was quite possibly the ugliest, most boring championship final in NCAA history.

But guess what? Uconn was still the champion! They still won the game!

WHO CARES if it's boring? I'll take a 5-3 win over anyone, anytime. It's still a win.

I can't argue that it can be boring to some, but WHO CARES?? I'll take a win any way I can get it.

I have watched every game this season, and I have been on the edge of my seat throughout every game, whether I'm at home or TBA.

This is the part I don't get. Martin's style of play is to play tough defense and take good shots. People keep acting like Martin runs some kind of slow down, Wisconsin or Virginia style offense designed to milk the clock and shorten the game. Martin has said on a couple different occasions that UT needs to play faster.
This season's poor scoring is about perimeter shooting, FT shooting, and turnovers. Style of play may keep UT from averaging near 80ppg like a couple of Pearl's teams but it not the reason for 20 point halves.

Making an assumption based on 10 minutes of player is never a good idea.

You say you hope we win every game, while right now we're winning most of our games, but you're complaining. Would you rather us be say, Cal State Fullerton who puts up 85 points a night, but is 6-5?

To me it's about winning, I don't really care if we're scoring in the 100s, or the teens, as long as we're winning. Losing a game that we score 90 points in isn't fun/exciting to me, it's a loss.

Bingo Zans.

If people would do their research they'd learn a thing or 2 about Martin's preferred style.

His last 2 years at Missouri State his teams averages 71ppg and 70ppg respectively. Last year, his first at UT, they averaged 69ppg.

If you look at his Missouri State teams there's some glaring differences that you can see why this team struggles sometimes to score. His Missouri State teams shot as a team about 38% from 3(we shoot 29% as a team), and their 3 players who got the most minutes all shot 39% or better from 3.(for reference skylar is shooting 33%) So when Martin keeps saying we've gotta hit shots, you see what he means, those are some deadly perimeter shooting teams he had.

Also, his Missouri State team shot over 45% from the field as a team, and over 73% from the free throw line as a team. Also, on the season they averaged 10TOs a game while we average 12TOs a game.

Just thought I'd point some of the numbers for people to see.
