Did anybody see the graphic for ND-AL game showing 8 NC's for ND and 9 for Bama? I bet several heads exploded when they posted that! :loco:

ESPN only credits wire service titles. ND claims 11 NCs.

ESPN only credits Tennessee with 2.

I always thought we should claim 56 instead of 67. Bowl games didn't count back then. We beat two ranked teams to Oklahoma's one that year but they started #1 in the preseason.

Not really, I wouldn't mind if the AD only claimed our AP ones, but if they are going to claim minor ones I think 56 is a better case than 67.

1938 and 50 are legit claims too, but y'all should be ashamed of 67. It's worse than Bama's 41 imo.

How on God's green earth do you reach that conclusion, stating that our '67 title claim, which is predicated on Litkenhous ratings service, is less credible than Bama's '41 title claim? Bamawriter and I recently had a very lively debate about the relative merits of various Tennessee vs. Alabama national title claims so you can look that up if you want. Suffice it to say, however, that 1967 was the last year that the two major polls did not take bowls into consideration. We were 9-1 going into the Orange Bowl and ranked 2nd in the polls.

As for the '41 Alabama team, I will allow this third-party source to speak to the absurdity of that claim: "One day, when I have children, I'll read about this one to them before bed each night. Fact is, it might as well be written in a book full of colorful pictures and fairy tales. The AP ranked Alabama 20th in the nation this season with 14 teams having better records above them. Once again, it is the Football Thesaurus that retroactively awards the Tide this title. Alabama finished third in the SEC that year, while Mississippi State won the SEC title. It completely baffles me that 'Bama claims a national title in 1941" (Alabama Fans Claim 12 National Championships: Reality Claims Otherwise | Bleacher Report).

Actually, you are talking to a Florida fan, so "your claim" isn't accurate.

That said, you know I don't like that claim, but you really aren't helping your case when you defend the 1967 claim. Sure, it's better than Bama's claim to '41, but is still an embarrassingly terrible claim. Great, it was awarded by a math system; so was 1941.

Thanks, bamawriter. I noticed that in retrospect and corrected it. 'twas a post-New Year's Day brain cramp, and I can't even blame alcohol for it, considering the fact that I am a teetotaler. Consider my face sufficiently purged of egg.

Their 67 claim is worse because the AP and Coaches had already been around for quite awhile by then (especially the AP).

So Bama only has nine national championships? That sounds about right. I'm glad someone finally checked into that. Somewhere around 1990, they jumped from being a five time champ to being a ten time champ....all in one winter after a bad season. That never did make any sense. Like some old dude dug out five national championships that they forgot about or something....found the trophies hidden deep in a cave or something

Yes. Personally, I count '51 and '98. The Neyland coached '38 team was good enough I would feel comfortable adding them to the list as well.

Like any reasonable fan should, instead of making all these ridiculous "14" T-Shirts or whatever you guys wear now. It's amazing you guys aren't borderline embarassed.

And saying we rationalize worse than you you guys is comical at best.
