ESPN pulls Robert Lee from UVA game.

Well they should have put that in their original statement they released last night. Seems like a cover your ass type situation.

After it became a story right?

Yes, a story based on ESPN's fear of the unknown. The correct answer was that he was still Asian, even to folks in Virginia. Had that ruled the day and you give people a little credit for knowing the difference, it wouldn't happen to begin with.

And it shouldn't take 24 hours to hear the whole simple story, much less constantly changing as it goes.

Most reports I've heard mentioned that Lee requested to be assigned to a different game.

But why waste a perfectly good opportunity to politicize something irrelevant and trivial? Amirite?

If that's true then this is a bunch of bs outrage and I'm not surprised at all that Clay Travis lead the charge.

Edit: I haven't seen anything stating that Lee requested the change; so I'm not sure that part is true. So it's back to ESPN made a very stupid decision. But Travis' going ape crap over it isn't much better.

When have you known ESPN to miss such an opportunity?

No kidding. Political people (which ESPN and Clay Travis both are, even though they'd both deny it) view everything through the lens of their political narrative. You always accuse the other side of pushing a narrative and deny that you have one of your own.

I happen to agree with Clay Travis's politics more than ESPN's, so I'm more sympathetic to Travis's viewpoints (like in this case), but he's still a political guy. He's really trying to carve out a niche and build a brand as a conservative Deadspin, which is probably going to work out really well for him.

The amount of people who are sick of ESPN's/the media's political antics (or perceived antics) is really large, especially in Travis's demographic.

The soap box can get old. Travis and ESPN better stay above the fray their railing on or millions will be calling them on it. And that's fair enough.

I suspect the next time Ryen Russillo wants to express himself about sports figures and his unique sense of right and wrong, there might be a few viewers who remind him of the last 24 hours. Just the way it works.

I initially heard Lebatard mention that Lee requested the reassignment, and an e-mail about the reassignment got leaked.

Our local sports radio talking head basically said the same thing on my drive home.

Much ado about nothing imo. My thought is Robert Lee didn't want to be the internet meme du jour...too late...

Not sure about that. People from the sports world like Clay Travis and Bomani Jones and political commentators/talk radio hosts in general speak in echo chambers. They aren't being listened to at all by the other side, and the only time their listeners become aware of something the other side said it is because their guy told them about something the other side said, which inherently puts it in the worst possible light.

As long as they are good at feeding their fans red meat, they'll keep coming back. Rush Limbaugh is a thrice-divorced (former?) drug addict that is still loved by a conservative audience and rakes in about $80m/year.

I agree, Clay Travis would probably have to break the law. And then it might not matter. He's one of the most politically incorrect personalities out there. I think he works hard on it.

Not sure about Bomani Jones, he's going to answer to the same bosses Russillo will. Let's see if Ryen is still employed by the end of the week.

I bet Bomani has a longer leash because he has political opinions his bosses agree with (not for ideological reasons, but for monetary ones) and probably does better with ESPN's target demo.

Russillo, AFAIK, isn't really political and probably has a more limited appeal to said demographic.

"A network spokesperson told SI's Richard Deitsch that ESPN did not force Lee to change assignments and that Lee personally felt more comfortable moving to another game."

And you blindly believe a "network executive." That's what we call damage control after the story blew up in their collective faces

I would say the left has reached the apex of stupidity but I have faith they can go higher. Probably within a day or two.

And the story blew up because people are stupid, so continue adding to it.

No it's not because people are stupid, it's because this is a microcosm of what's happening in the country right now. Just like espn having to apologize for auctioning off a black player during a god**** fantasy football draft. I mean you know it's bad when even MSNBC was laughing at them this morning.
