The NBA may have come back to TV to play the second half of its COVID-delayed 2020 season, but judging by the dismal ratings, it appears the fans have not.

Ethan Strauss of The Athletic notes that the league’s ratings are coming in well under the pre-COVID break numbers.

ABC’s NBA broadcasts in 2019-20 averaged 2.95 million viewers, down from its 5.42 million during 2011-12, Strauss wrote. That is a 45 percent drop off.

Strauss also reported that TNT’s viewership is down 40 percent since the 2011-12 season, and ESPN has seen a decline of about 20 percent during the same time.

What is with these ESPN hirings?

Perhaps we expect better from ESPN because it’s a 24/7 sports network, the last place we’d think would wreck every sport it touches.

Yet, here we are. Again, and still. To tune to ESPN to watch a live sports event is to be conditioned — air-conditioned — to anticipate a production that will challenge the good senses to a duel the good senses can’t win.

Consider what ESPN has done to big-league baseball:

Lol, now we're comparing 2020 to 2012 so we can write the same clickbait story again. The NBA was pretty apolotical for the most part the last decade, aside from declining Trump invites to the white house. Going all the way back to 2012 to tell this story makes them full of ****.

I can't recall what specifically Bill Maher's issue with the NBA was in the early 2000's when he still had his Politically Incorrect show on network TV. He might have had a hang up with the owners, because he would always harp on the league's in game attendance demographic being an absurd ratio like +80% white.

I'm not taking up for Breitbart by the way, rag away, but I've seen sportswriters go back years like that for all sports for different reasons over the years. An unexpected drop in attendance would be a good reason to go back and show scale.

How much is due to protest and BLM? All I can do is guess. I guarantee you it's significant though.

And the bubble format with virtual screens & fans flat sucks. Its better than nothing but there is a very real element of excitement missing without them playing before an arena full of fans. That is probably a huge reason for lower ratings than expected during the pandemic.

I have no doubt that they have lost some fans in the last couple years, the point is Breitbart is full of **** with the way they are trying to frame the conversation. There are a million reasons it's misleading to compare today's ratings to even last year's, let alone 8 years ago. Like:

Yep, people all over the country are not watching sports because you know, just because.
People are sick to death of politics and when they tune in to watch a movie or TV show or sports, they don't want a political statement. When athletes start to lecture the fans, they've lost more fans than they can keep. Adios Basketball, Pro Football and Baseball.... take a knee, flip a bird or cuss a fan, but I'm done watching you entitled little pusses tell me how I should think or behave.
