It's been around in every level of tackle football for, well, ever. To think otherwise is extremely naive.

Played high school ball. Never heard of any bounties. And for that matter, I never saw or receieved any kind of bottom of the pile shenanigans either.

I believe if this does exist at every level, it is very limited. I don't think every college program has a Shapiro.

I never said that it didn't go on at every level brother. But as the highest level of the sport the nfl has to set an example.

I can think of some mean SOBs that would break you in half for free, just for the lulz. Ray Nitschke, Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary.

You can't be setting bounties for cart offs and then come back 20 years later and sue the NFL for not promoting safety.

It's got to be one way or the other.

I also think adding money into the equation adds some thump to it, even if it's only $10k, it shows a clear intent to injure.

For instance look at Eric Berry's injury, plus a hypothetical bounty. Stevie Johnson's block, helmet-to-knee, on Eric Berry was not a good football play and completely unnecessary. As it is, I think it is dirty and now dislike Stevie Johnson, but I don't expect him to be punished or anything wild like that. But if it turned out Buffalo had a bounty program, that then shows that it's itentional and encouraged by the organization. I then expect hell to rain down on that organization. Good thing I'm pretty sure Stevie Johnson is just an idiot who I'm glad is in Buffalo so I hear very little from.

BIG penalties coming down today. Per NFL network (among others).

Saints Head Coach suspended without pay for 2012 season effective April 1st.

Saints GM suspended 8 games and must pay $500,000.

Former Saints DC Gregg Williams suspended indefinitely.

Saints Asst Coach Joe Vitt suspended 6 games also. (Was supposed to be the interim HC)

More to come...

@AdamSchefter: Payton suspended one yr. Loomis 8 game and $500,000 fine. Saints fined $500,000 and second round pick in 2012 & 2013

Gregg Williams has been suspended indefinitely.

Punishments for players are still being determined by the NFLPA.

Slightly surprised on the draft pick choice there.

So are penalties/sanctions for Williams also expected to come at some point?

Yeah he is suspended indefinitely.... at least for 2012 season and possibly longer.

Slightly surprised the Rams hadn't gone ahead and fired him.

Either way, Rams need to find a new DC..guesses where they go this late?

With Fisher as HC, I wouldn't worry too much about their D. He's had a couple weeks to consider his options.

Not worrying. It's just hires this late are often interesting; they can often have quite a ripple effect, especially with most coaches at the pro and college level having by now settled in (those who were free having been hired, others expected still on staff at this point) for a season's haul with their teams

I know this won't happen, but I wish he'd go get Jim Washburn for DC.

Chris Mortensen said banishment from the NFL FOR LIFE isn't out of the question for Gregg Williams.
