I look back and I can make an argument for several other players but it's become a best QB on the best team award

So what exactly would a running back have to do to win this award....3,000 yards? Or play for Alabama I guess. A non-qb non-Bama player hasn't won the award since 2005.

Some people just can’t help themselves. Nobody had to ask your permission to start a thread on this. Who are you? Just don’t comment and move on. Jackwad!
So people can't be curious about human motivations? I asked a question. You calling people names. Get off your high horse.

I think my biggest problem is him being the only defensive player to win the award. I think other defensive players have had seasons more impressive than Woodson. I think from Johnny Manziel to many underclassmen winning has taken away from the award, not to mention a 4-7 Notre Dame player winning over Johnny.
I don’t know if y’all remember, or are even old enough to remember, but Sportscenter would run segments that year on why it wasn’t right that defensive players aren’t considered for Heisman.

Getting involved in trying to influnce the outcome instead of covering what happened. I always thought there were a few producers or anchors that were testing out the shows influence. Trying to see if they can get a defensive player in the final vote if not win.

Funny how Champ Bailey was better in EVERY category his senior year at UGA and didnt even get an invite. Total ******** award.
This right here shows the absolute BS with that year. It’s a propaganda award. Not the first time a Vol player was screwed.

On its face it was a smart aleck question. If your intent was to ask what the motivation was then maybe you should have constructed a sentence that made that more clear. I’ve seen too many times on this board where people jump on people for starting a thread and asking a question or stating an opinion. I thought this was a message board to express opinions. That’s kind of the purpose of the board.

I’m one of the few Vol fans I guess that feel Manning lost it on the field. He was horrible against South Carolina at home (126 yards) and beat a bad 3-8 Vandy 17-10 at home with only 159 yards the last game of the year. This is when you make your statement game to give the voters no choice but to vote for you. You should steamroll Vandy with 300+ yards and 3 TDs to make that statement. But that’s kinda Mannings whole career pro and college. When he needed that big statement game in a big moment, he often came up small. The only one I really remember was the 21-3 comeback against New England in the playoffs.

If Danny Wuerffel had’nt won the Heisman in 1996, Peyton Manning would have won it RUNNING AWAY in 1997! - The Media just was NOT going to give it to Another QB from the South / SEC - 2 Years in a row!!!!!! You Cannot Tell me that Charles Woodson from Michigan had a better career In College - OR in the NFL than - Peyton Manning! — Does Anybody still remember his name?????

And what ever happened to Danny Wuerffel, Anyway???????
I agree with everything but remembering Woodson’s name. Guys in the Hall of Fame, and is on TV regularly. We see Peyton way more because he’s never met a product he won’t market.

The Heisman Trophy goes to the most outstanding player in CFB. Of all the many thousands of CFB players across the US, the downtown athletic club has to narrow it down to 1, the majority of the time that 1 being a QB. There's a solid chance they've never gotten it right.

I mean dang if Javadeon Clowney can't win it...

Would still like to see the SEC elevate its own player of the year award to Heisman like status and place the politically charged Heisman in the same trash heap as the Downtown Athletic Club (yes it collapsed and is out of business) The new deal with ESPN should be leveraged to make it the most prestigious college football award in American from the most competitive college football conference on the planet, grab a national sponsor and a swanky club from Nashville or Atlanta to host the award and the ceremony and let the rest of the "awards" fend for themselves.

Sorry fellow Vol fan but, Woodson had an awesome Sr. season that year and a HOF career that spanned a long time. He was worthy but, to allude to your point, he made it easier not to award a southern QB the award the second year in a row.
Woodson was not worthy over Peyton. It was a travesty.

“And what ever happened to Danny Wuerffel, Anyway???????”

Ended up in a ministry in New Orleans. My wife and I hung out with his dad John and mom (can’t remember her name) one time. Nice man. We kicked his azz in mountain biking so he invited us to his house. Held Danny’s Heisman trophy. The thing was heavy. They had a bedroom full of Danny’s trophies lying on the floor. I asked why they didn’t have a case for them. He told us they didn’t bring back good memories.

He ran a punt back against Ohio State. That's it. That's all it took. ESPN pushed him heavy at the end of the year. Never heard of him before that game.

Carl Pickens did everything Woodson did and then some and got nary a sniff from the midwest and east coast sports writers who still dominate the voting.

I still have a "HEIST-man" Trophy sweatshirt somewhere.

Haven't paid a go**amned bit of attention to the Heisman since.

Kinda like the NBA. Haven't given a crap about it since Bird, Magic, The Chief and Kareem retired.

They judged Peyton on the fact he never beat Florida, that and Keith Jackson basically ran a Heistman campaign for Woodson.

I wonder how biased this is going to be. I hope they address:
1) The ABC/ESPN media push for Woodson, Big 10 bias
2) The push for a defensive player to get it and how may defensive players since made it to New York (D Suh is the only one I remember)
3) And Chris Fowler's White Trash statement
