Ever had to deal with the maintence costs on a Land Rover?

if they are so bad, why do the army rangers use them instead of hmmwvs?

If there's no oil under a hmmwv there's none in it.

Truth. Plus you can fit two side by side in an MH-47, but only one hmmwv fits.

Also the HMMWV is much more expensive from the outset.

I assume Chatt shut down his wife on the Land Rover.

Let me also say that if she is interested in any of the following you should say no to as well:

Ford Pinto
Lancia Beta
Mazda RX-8
Chevy Corvair
Most MGs/Triumphs/Rovers

We had an old LR at the ranch once. My uncle owns a used car lot, and he thought it would be as dependable as the jeeps we already had out there.

Don't remember how many miles the LR had but I do know that they don't function well in deep deep water. We trashed that thing in a creek bed one night. Lol

Not exactly. It's still up in the air. We wanted to go drive it but blizzard-geddon of Tennessee kept us inside. We still don't know what to do. We are going to have a mechanic look at it. The dealer is a trusted friend who knows the ins and outs and he seems to think it's extremely solid. He's like a second father to my wife so he wouldn't lead us astray. He's not making money off of it if he sells it to us, he just wants my wife to have a good car.

For every bad review out there, there's also a good review. Some people are saying they would jump all over it, others are saying run. We are just very torn about it.

Haha that's what in thinking too.

Sutton is terrific. I think we're pushing 2 months now since his last seizure. He's growing every day.

How's Behr? Any seizures for him lately?

That's awesome! I saw the pic in the other thread, he looks good. I wish you the best of luck, he's gonna be a great dog.

Had to put Behr down. I know you know what it's like to lose one. Nuff said.

My wife and I have an opportunity to get a steal on a 2002 Land Rover Discovery II and she really wants it. The only problem is the maintenance costs are scaring her.

Are they really as bad as people say? What's so bad? Parts? Labor? Are we talking double what a "normal" car would cost or just like 10-20% higher?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I had a 99 Discovery. Engine and transmission are great, everything else, not so much. Replaced a steering column at a $1000, and two months later it broke again. Sold it the next day. Ive never replaced a steering column in any other car Ive owned, so no idea of the costs. Oh yea, the speedometer didnt work and neither did the odometer, so no idea on how many miles it had. Well above 150K

Look, they are very solid machines. They weigh 500 lbs. more than a Toyota 4 runner (about the same size). They are really intended to be used off road but they have been glitzed up to be more on road comfy. They are not as reliable as a Jap car but in my opinion more fun to drive. If you buy this one find a good Land Rover expert in business for himself and you will be OK. If you buy it and it doesn't work out you will not be out much $$. Just know what you are buying.

What??? Oh man I am so sorry to hear that. I know how close he was to you. I will be praying for you and your family. Maybe he will meet Max in Heaven. I definitely feel your pain after losing Max and I'm extremely sorry for you, if you need anything please don't hesitate to let me know. You helped with Sutton so much I owe it to you.

The dang drive shaft in mine came loose with me driving down road . It cost $500 to fix which I thought was reasonable but it's always something with it. I hardly drive it cause I'm scared something else will break.

I'm glad you mentioned this. The D2's do have a design flaw in that non-greasable u-joints were used but the grease gets cooked due to their proximity to the catalytic converter and a/c condensate drain. They should be replaced with greasable ones. Hit 'em every oil change and you will have no plroblems. There are stories of them coming apart at speed and punching a hole in the transmission. It is a well known issue among the LR community.

They are awesome machines. There are potential problems but the fun of owning one outweighs them to me. As I wrote above, find a good independent and the issues are not all that expensive. DO NOT GO TO A DEALER, they will hose you.

Agreed

the mighty Pinto ? I had one, it ran great for years,it was a station wagon, ran great and no cost as far as break downs, till it cracked one of the aluminum heads,I traded if for a shot gun then, one of the best 500 dollars i have owned lol

and a corvair is a fine beast,if you just drive it on the weekends and don't go far :)

Buying a used car from a friend... nothing can go wrong there.

What is the reasoning behind buying a 12 year old vehicle? Brand? attempted "Balling out"? I'd take your money and buy a new(er) vehicle with a warranty and modern accoutrements. This thing probably comes with a tape deck right?..

This.

This is all about the idea of buying some brand.

No one would literally want a 12 year old Rover.

But it never works. Unless you are OLD no one who can afford to drive a brand new Land Rover would be driving one for 12 years..

Well on an older car that is reliable, I would have no problem getting a car that is 12 years old. Some older cars are better looking than their contemporaries.

For instance I would take this:

Uh it's money. Isn't that the reason anyone buys an older car? We have to keep this cheap. She is trying to get into Vet school and if she does I will be the sole breadwinner. We can't exactly have a $400 car payment following us around every month.

That's why I would buy something new or slightly used. You can score plenty of decent cars and keep payments under $150 a month or whatever your budget is. And you'll appreciate the simple things that almost all modern cars have like USB and SD card ports, warranties, etc.

I wouldn't buy a Land Rover used or New.

What is the "deal" you can get on this thing?
