Ever had to deal with the maintence costs on a Land Rover?

Well on an older car that is reliable, I would have no problem getting a car that is 12 years old. Some older cars are better looking than their contemporaries.

For instance I would take this:

over this:

Tastes differ. I think both of those vehicles are hideous. I think vehicles that utilize a lot of curves do not weather the storm well when it comes to lasting visual appeal (excluding some old classics). Again, differences in taste. Lexus and Infiniti looked too much like their Toyota and Nissan counterparts up until recently. Honda still hasn't figured out how to visually differentiate their Acuras from their POS 4 bangers yet.

Those late model SC's are good for a chuckle when I see them due to their ugliness.

Funny you mention the curves not aging well. I would of agreed with that about a year ago. Now the 90s SC and the C5 Corvette look quite attractive to me again. Also with the Vette the fact that there will be a lot of cheaper ones on the market soon doesn't hurt.

Acura sells so well due to their low cost of maintenance and they come well equipped even in base trim compared to the Germans. The style however is no where near that of an Audi, Merc or BMW. But you can keep the Acura for a very long time and it won't ask for much to keep it running.

What??? Oh man I am so sorry to hear that. I know how close he was to you. I will be praying for you and your family. Maybe he will meet Max in Heaven. I definitely feel your pain after losing Max and I'm extremely sorry for you, if you need anything please don't hesitate to let me know. You helped with Sutton so much I owe it to you.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. You owe me nothing, just glad what I was going through with Behr helped you with Sutton. Let me know how Sutton is doing every once in a while if you think about, and good luck with the car search.

Elaborate please. He's not just "some guy". He's like a second father to my wife and he owns a dealership. What are you saying could go wrong?

Nevermind. I really don't feel like getting into it. I have my own personal reasons, but I don't want to influence you in any way. You're going to buy the car anyways (just a gut feeling I have).

It just seems like it is going to be another one of those threads where people ask for advice about making big ticket item purchases and then turn around and don't follow any of the advice given and buy whatever the hell they wanted to buy in the first place.

that's why i would buy something new or slightly used. You can score plenty of decent cars and keep payments under $150 a month or whatever your budget is. And you'll appreciate the simple things that almost all modern cars have like usb and sd card ports, warranties, etc.

I wouldn't buy a land rover used or new.

What is the "deal" you can get on this thing?

$3,000

This.

This is all about the idea of buying some brand.

No one would literally want a 12 year old Rover.

Easy on the absolute statements, friend. There is quite a large community of Disco enthusiasts out there. Some might like it for the badge, most like it for its off-road capability and (relatively) cheap cost. LR today is nothing like they were when the Discos were made. They are nothing more than luxury vehicles on par with Lexus, Mercedes, and the like. Their off road capability has been gutted since they are owned by Indians and made in China.
Sad, really.

Uh it's money. Isn't that the reason anyone buys an older car? We have to keep this cheap. She is trying to get into Vet school and if she does I will be the sole breadwinner. We can't exactly have a $400 car payment following us around every month.

As an owner I can tell you that repairs could get expensive if you pay someone else to do the work. I work on my own vehicles so I get the parts pretty cheap and no labor, plus I enjoy doing it. Along with the driveshaft issue to validate, you must also find out if it has the original spark plug wires (they are gray and the upper intake manifold has to be removed in order to replace them), has the "3 amigos" issue been addressed (you have to replace the ABS module to correctly fix it, some will incorrectly assume it's just a wheel sensor), and have the head gaskets been replaced yet (at that age and mileage these things are famous for blowing them if they haven't already). Do a Google search and the LR forums will let you know what you need to look at and what a good deal is. If any one of those 3 issues have not been addressed, I would take a pass unless you don't mind a project (or the price comes down to reflect the work that will need done).

My opinion is that I would take that money and just get a new or slightly used Honda/Toyota..something reliable. Like a previous poster stated the repairs can become expensive if you don't do them yourself. After your Wife becomes a Vet THEN buy a new Land Rover :good!:

If that's the car you want, just buy it. $3,000 ain't nothing. If it falls apart just buy something else

I'd take just about anything over a SC430.

Well I started the thread really just inquiring about the maintenance cost of a Rover vs. a more "average" car. I wasn't really asking "should I buy this car?" That's a big life decision I'm not going to leave up to Volnation to make for me. I never really got much of an answer regarding repair costs, so I just did the research myself and decided it was worth the risk.

I appreciate everyone's input and it definitely motivated me to research, but I feel pretty good about our purchase.

I feel like I gave pretty decent insight. My apologies if I wasn't helpful. Enjoy the new vehicle!
