Excluding Hooker/Dobbs, is there a QB in the last 10 years you would rather have on the field than Joe?

No. I take Milton and it's not even close. As I had stated in another thread, Milton's biggest obstacle is that we all got very spoiled by Hooker. Hooker and Dobbs are easily the best QBs that we've had in recent times. Hendon is a tough act to follow. Had Milton taken over for any other QB on that list we'd be singing his praises. He's a solid QB.

For perspective, complaining about a talent like Joe is kind of a "luxury problem" to have for us these days. I say that because if you could replace him with any other QB in the "Dark times of UT football", who else would you want from these choices? I used all the starting QB's I can think of from the last 10 years.

Worley
Peterman (The Tennessee version)
Dormady
Keller Chryst
JG
Will McBride
JT Shrout
Maurer
Harrison Bailey

Personally, I'm taking Milton over this list 10/10 times.

You could go back a little further and add Bray to the discussion and that might kick up some opinions, but I'm not sure he's a great fit for Heup's system. I'd probably still rather have Joe.
No, it's not a really a luxury problem. We had terrible QBs outside of Dobbs and Hooker, terrible QB coaching, and generally bad offensive game plans for those QBs. It was the pits. Just having middling QBs would have been better.

Im not sure i really understand the point of the OP. You're saying would I rather have Milton over Guarantano and a bunch of career backup QBs? Well yeah! How is this a question? I mean Dobbs and Hooker lead our team over the majority of the last 10 years with Guarantano making up the bulk of the remainder. If you compare Milton to those 4 then he is 3rd.

As other posters point out though we had bad QB play but even worse coaching and recruiting. How would some of those other QBs have performed with the talent and coaching of the 2022 team? We can never know.

Also consider that for most of that time the transfer portal did not exist which is how we ended up with both Hooker and Milton. Not a luxury we had back then.

Back in the day if your starting QB was a bust you were pretty much screwed.

No to that list. Tayven Jackson has been decent this year at Indiana, would be interesting seeing him in this offense, but I doubt he'd be better than Joe.
Have you read an Indiana forum? They are not big fans. Generally they say he is indecisive, poor runner, and not very accurate. I think he got benched in the 4th quarter last game. He may Be good in the future but not now IMO.

None on that list was a legitimate SEC-caliber starter IMO.
To be fair no one thought Hooker was either till Heupel got him. You need a guy that can process fast and deliver the ball accurately; idk if I like any of those better than Milton but I would like to see what Heupel could do with them.

You are leaving out Riley Ferguson, the guy Dobbs beat out. Threw for a million yards at Memphis and they had some good teams. I like Milton better but Ferguson is to be considered.

I left out several but my criteria was that they needed to at least start one game. He never started.

Tayven is suffering from a lack of good leadership and mentoring at IU.
Their OC (whom they just fired) was not very good at all and had zero grasp on how to use TJ's talents.
Sadly, the guy stepping up to replace him is a decent OC...20 some odd years ago.

Right now, I'd probably rate Milton as our 4th best QB this century, behind Hooker, Dobbs, and Casey Clausen. Milton vs Ainge might be a debate, though.

Hey, this brings a thit to my mind. Nehonwas that backup QB that got all the notoriety for towel waving, getting in OLs faces, and sideline cheering. He xferred from Colorado was @ battle for Bristol and was here a yr.
Surely he was better than Joe. 😄
Sheriron Jones and no he was not better than Joe.

Joe is getting better with playing time. He isn’t Hooker or Peyton or Dobbs, but he’s our best chance to win this season. He’s frustrating at times, but my wife tells me I am too.

The trouble is we have no idea what any of these QB's could have done in Heupel's system. Any one of them might have been all SEC, you just never know. The chances are very slim I know, but it is just so hard because we also had some bad OC's during those QB's tenures.

Agreed. Recent memory bias hurts Milton.

Immagine if Coach Heupel had Josh Dobbs Alvin Kamara and Jalen Hurd in the backfield and Jauan Jennings to throw to.

That's what Butch Jones pissed away.

What if he had Tyler Bray and Cordarrelle Patterson but with a good OL unlike Dooley.

I’ve blocked out several of those from my memory.

Not that I want him over Joe but it would have been interesting to see JG develop under a competent coaching staff like the current one.
