Expectations next year?

I could not get into any sport that Vanderbilt dominated....so I kind of looked at college baseball w a detached view...but I couldn't help getting into Vol baseball this year cuz they were so dominant and exciting....plus being ranked #1 caught my attention but I still had my doubts cuz it's....UT...and we always fail in whatever playoffs we're in. Early exit in softball...basketball...etc...but I thought for sure we'd get to the finals w this baseball team...but in typical UT fashion...we lose...so I'm very disappointed....but not shocked. I mean..
#1 in the country. I'm sick and tired of the same old "thanks for a great season" crap we always say after we lose to a team we're favored against in whatever playoffs we're in. I'm sorry...but it's getting so old and predictable. I don't know how to fix it...but it's so predictable that we're gonna lose to a team we weren't supposed to in every sport...every year. "So proud of those kids..." blah blah blah. Whatever. They DID have a good season....sure...but man am I tired of these postseason failures....even though I know they're coming at some point....but to be #1 and that dominant...this early exit surprised even me.

History is littered with examples of the best team not winning it all. Look no farther than Arkansas baseball last year. Ironically they didn’t make it to Omaha either.

Depending on who you ask another example also hits pretty close to home. A fair number of folks think Ohio State had the best team the year we won the football title in 98.

Thanks for sharing. Bye.

Lots of competition for dumbest post of the day but you’re in contention.
Why is that dumb? It's true. In basketball every year Vols lose in playoffs or tourney to a team they are favored against. The word "choke" is uncomfortable I guess for a lot of folks.

I think the point might be they are different sports. Rubbing salt in the wound may make you feel better I guess.

Don’t care who leaves, the expectations will have never been higher. Last year we figured out what a Vitello team was capable of. This year we figured out that was just the beginning. It’s crazy to realize it, but its CWS or bust from here on out. And a cws ship will always be the goal, and a reasonable one. Go Vols

Any idea who else we are targeting in the transfer portal? Love the pickup of the Kansas SS, but is there any truth to the Tommy Tanks stuff? Any pitchers we might pursue (though that would be tough to pull with Burns, Beam, and Doe all coming back)?

I think he will be. Even if he wasn’t is there really anything he could do more to improve his stock?
No, I don’t see him coming back at all and wasn’t what I was implying; he’s gone for sure. I’m just not of the opinion he’s worth a 1st round draft pick. Some draft boards see it differently.

We had a catcher committed from the portal for this year but he decided to take a pro deal instead.

We have a pretty good shot to land the Skenes kid from Air Force. If we miss on him, it’s probably going to be Dickey or someone else in the portal
Transfer from WV didn’t take a pro deal. He joined a fraternity and quit baseball.

The team will be loaded. Whether or not Vitello can get them beyond the curse of UT sports mediocrity and winning the one series that counts is a different concern.
If you think this season was mediocre, well, you will always be disappointed. Best regular season in history and won the SEC Championship. Historic season for sure.

Just another NegaVol sighting. Geez. It was an incredible season. Winning Omaha takes a little luck along with lots of skill. That’s why it’s so hard to win.

Wait, why are you crapping on basketball but saying football is in the best possible position? JH may end up great but he hasn't done anything yet to deserve that kind of praise, especially if you're going to crap on Barnes. The basketball program right now is still in a better position to win a post-season title than football and probably will be a bit longer. And that's not a slam on JH, that's just the situation with Georgia and Alabama in the SEC.
Fair in that Barnes is a HOF coach. He’s done a great job in a lot of areas and given us a program where we expect to make the tournament every year and that’s not something to disregard. After the teams he’s had and the fact that we’ve only made it out of the first weekend once, respectfully to all he’s done, I’ll believe we have a chance when we get an elite 8. And yes-we are lucky to have CRB

Not so sure a season title and sec championship is mediocre.
My mediocrity comment was directed at the larger athletics program and not what Coach Vitello has done the last few years. I’m not arguing those titles don’t count or it wasn’t a special year that we all should appreciate. I just felt that literally the only black mark for this team was missing Omaha and that was the only area you can argue they underachieved.

Like I told the other poster-mediocrity is directed at UT athletics in general and not anything Coach Vitello has done. He’s done nothing in a mediocre fashion since stepping on campus.

I hope it's not Dickey, I don't see him lasting without injuries.
