Expectations

It completely shocks me to hear people say UF is a lock for a win. For Christ sakes they we re 4-8 this year and still throttled us. History tells us that game will never be a lock no matter how good we are or how bad they are. I will be impressed if team 118 makes a bowl game next year and if not I am happy if they show improvement week in and week out.

OHHHH No.....True fans will give the staff and team 4-6 yrs to get to a bowl game, right?

i am on record as saying before 2013 that 2014 will be better than 2013.

i still believe that.

however, to have great expectations for this season would be foolish. half the roster are freshman.

Better record in 14'. UT or UF?

Butch just now. "I want to guard against unrealistic expectations... these are 17-18 year old kids..."

Some of those 17-18 year olds look like they are already 22. 14 EE's is huge and will go a long way to making some of these players much more effective this year. Still, 6 wins is a reasonable expectation however I think this team could overachieve and get 7-8.

I remember this time last year. Folks were posting 6-6 or 7-5 and a bowl but likely 6-6 with losing Bray, Rivera, CP, JH.....then the season actually ended that way and Butch is a moron, Butch sucks, this ain't Cincinatti, and Butch is in over his head here....blah, blah, blah.

So I say 6-6 and hope 7-5 or better. I for one am excited about seeing this team with sum studs at every position on the field finally...not just one here or there and some quality depth to fill the back up spots. But sadly enough I will be expecting to see the same I hate Butch garbage on here if we are 6-6.

The loss to Vandy was the disappointment. No one knew Mizzoo was going to be a top ten team and many thought Auburn would be a win. Going 5-7 and losing a must win against Vandy after the win over USC was a tough pill to swallow. No Tennessee fan wants another coaching change and everyone is in Butch's corner hoping he is the one. Recruiting classes like this should give everyone hope. Coaches win by getting the better players. We have the best class in the SEC East this year and a good start for next year. I expect us to sneak into a bowl game next year at 6-6.

that's a really tough question.

i'll say tennessee.

florida beat tennessee last year and still had a worse record.

so, assuming tennessee beats florida, it would be hard to see florida with a better record.

I am on record as saying that gator trolls should be banned from this forum.

I still believe that.

However, I have to acknowledge that you really went out on a limb there to declare that our new coach would have more success in his 2nd year than his 1st. Who would have thought?

i don't know if you are being sarcastic here or not, but the vast majority of the board believed 2013 would be better than 2014....before the first game was played last season.

I'd say it will depend greatly on your QB play and how well he adapts to the new offense. And your two cross conference games are no picnic this coming year.

But let's face it, you're playing in Neyland where we should (hopefully) be coming off a UGA win. And I think this team, coaches included, should see what happened last year and not make the same mistakes this year.

I'll call the game close right now. Won't call a winner because you are Florida and we have that mental block with you, but will call it close.

I expect the Defense to be as good in the early going high talent/low experience vs average talent/high experience last year. Team speed improvements will cancel out greenhorn mistakes. After mid-season, our defense will be much better in all phases, LB, DL and Secondary. Should be at least 7 points less per game allowed.

Offense, it is about our O-line and QB. RBs will be most improved as will WR position.

We are bringing a good 6 olinemen but I do worry about depth. Last year Oline suffered as it transitioned from pro style protection to read option protection. Really seemed to set Tiny back from Junior year. Kerbyson, Jackson, Weisman, Pair, etc will have a full year under that blocking scheme and should be fine after first two games. Hopefully Blair and other recruits are fast learners.

As for QB: Dobbs and Worley picked up valuable experience last season. I'm not sure we go with a Senior though. Ferguson may be the best of the litter and we will find out by August, maybe sooner. Peterman will either stay and hope he gets a mulligan for Florida game which was a disaster or he transfers. He should have left the game sooner with that thumb injury

Utah State is key to season as they are very experienced, talented and well coached...And it will be first game for a lot of new starters. Crowd better be loud and disruptive.

If we win Utah State, then we can beat Oklahoma but we will be at least 7 point underdogs in Norman. What we need to know is how much of Sugar Bowl was bama pouting about not being in NCG/not making a showing and how much was Oklahoma just being studly and good? FWIW, OK doesn't lose a lot of talent this season except WR & RB.

I see a ceiling of 9-4 including bowl win, but 7-6 is most likely outcome as of now.

USCe, OK & bama being toughest games.

Do you really think we go win at Athens? UGA will be better than UF. If we win on the road at Georgia then give Butch a five year extension.

We always play Georgia tough whether it's at home or away. Other than 2010, we haven't had a really lopsided game in the past decade with them. They will be rebuilding and starting over with a new QB.

I'd say we could take them.

Sooner or later it will happen. UT has had a few shots in that stretch but until they do confidence is hard to have.

Coin flip right now. I see both as 6 or 7 win teams. UF pickin up Bama doesn't help.

that's Phil-like. win one game, get 5 more years and a raise.

My point is if he beats UGA (something we haven't accomplished since 2009) I would be shocked. I will be at the game and rooting for the Vols but UGA is going to probably the best team we play outside of Alabama next year.

I would think Mizzou would be okay as well.

I would say 6-6 is realistic. Wins over the 3 cupcakes, UK, and Vandy. The sixth wins will come over Ole miss, Florida, UGA, or USCe. Given the youth at Tennessee I dount they win more than one of those 4 games. Still CBJ and company engineered an upset last year. I see no reason that they won't do it again.

I'm expecting 6 wins, and any more than that would be a bonus. Throw in a bowl win, too.

I also expect to see some much-improved team speed, improved special teams kickoff and punt coverage, and good depth at all positions on defense.

Not sure what to expect on offense yet, running or passing. Gonna need much better QB play to get North, Pig, Croom, Malone, Pearson, Helm, Wolf, Wharton and others touches.

In all, I'm excited about our future and expect big things this year.

I don't see Hart being the type to give and extension for an SEC win. I see him waiting and seeing to see how year 2 and possibly year 3 goes before even considering CBJ's extension.

I will make the prediction of 7-5 with the losses of Oklahoma, Mizzou and Bama and then two of USCe, UGA, Florida or Ole Miss. I feel we will win at least two of the games nobody will expect us to win.

This is barring major injuries especially at the QB position. No matter who starts, having a consistent QB throughout the season is paramount. None of this week before the first game choosing a QB. Not switching horses in the middle of the stream like we did at Florida. Pick one this spring, stick with them until they prove themselves unworthy of the task.
