Extra spots for next year

Need 2-3 instant impact transfers on both the DL and OL.

Need another QB, can be transfer or another incoming freshmen, hell maybe we put the UCF guy on scholly and call it a day.

Wouldn't mind an instant impact TE transfer.

Need 1-2 edge guys that can play right away.

Need 1-2 LB's that can play right away.

I'm fine with no secondary transfers as long as we get Stewart, Jones, Caldwell, and Thomas.

The only instant impact player we will have coming in is Walter. (I'll have an update on him this week)

Oh, they are way more miss from Juco. Only get 2/3 years. All things being equal, you take the high schooler to develop for 4/5 years. Guys go Juco for a reason- either bad grades, which is discipline, or they weren’t good enough in high school.
but they can play now which is what we need at certain spots

I’m talking about Tiyon Evans, you just recruit the best players doesn’t matter where they are from
Ask people to name Tennessee's top playmakers of the 2010s.

It's probably going to start with Alvin Kamara and Cordarelle Patterson. Von Pearson probably isn't too far down the list.

For every one of those, there are two of Dave Clark, Byron Moore, Izauea Lanier, Darrington Sentimore, Woody Quinn, Riyahd Jones, Dontavis Blair, Chris Weatherd, Jonathan Kongbo, Desmond Henderson, Alexis Johnson, Jeff George, Emmitt Gooden, Jahmir Johnson, Jordan Allen, Kenneth George, Savion Williams.

Kamara is an outlier because he was a 5 star recruit that went Juco after transferring from Bama to continue development during his year off. That won't happen now with the new transfer rule. Patterson was all about grades, and every once in a while, you may see a kid like that. But overall, relying on Jucos to build a program is not a good idea.

What I just read “if we land the best player in the portal at every position, we have a chance!”

Rule won't help us for players who left in the spring of 2021. It's only for players who leave in Fall 2021 and Spring 2022, which we currently have 2. So we can add 2 additional counters to this 2022 class for a total of 27 thus far.

Of course it doesn't go into effect until AFTER we lose a bunch of guys to the portal. Sigh.

Amazing players are the outlier for high school recruits also.

For every Josh Dobbs, there's also a (insert endless list, but we can start with Maurer, Shrout, Salter, Peterman).

It's already been discussed, but we need to trim some fat while also getting our scholarship players up from 71 to 85. Taking 25 high school kids and 7 JUCOs would be a great way to accomplish that.

This isn't a controversial thread, it's simply those who understand the situation and those that don't.

Wonder if we circle back to any high school guys that we stopped recruiting?
Kody Jones would be my guess if we did. AP hinted at getting a lot of JUCO DBs in a recent podcast. Maybe add Kaydin Pope but we don't need a 5th WR this class. Maybe Quentel Jones on the DL but we will probably go transfer there. Although a DT I could very well see us going after is DT Gio Davis.

I’ve followed recruiting for years and never wavered on this. It still fits today. I don’t mind plugging holes, but you don’t build your program on Jucos. History bears that out. They are Jucos for a reason. Maybe you disagree, but developing high school kids is a much better way of doing it.

Anyone relying on Alvin Kamara for this argument is just not being honest. He is a huge outlier and an exception. He went Juco because of his timing for leaving Bama and playing during his transfer year. Those kind of guys can now transfer without penalty.

Well obviously you're not going to build your team on players from a place where about 20 good players are available

Thanks for the info. I hope these extra spots help Heupel rebuild faster

I'm not disputing that and I haven't seen anyone in this thread dispute that.

The question at hand is would you rather have 25 signees or 32. The latter currently benefits Tennessee a ton because we're short on bodies, whether we use all 7 extras on JUCO or not.

Still, from a percentage standpoint, we get way more production out of JUCOs. Everyone does. The problem is you'll never build a strong enough team chemistry if they constitute the bulk of your program. 7/32 is fine, especially if the other option is just 25 total.

Again. This thread should have zero debate. It's literally just people not understanding the question.

I understand the question just fine. Bruin brought up the Juco question, so it's relevant. I wouldn't necessarily use one of the seven on a Juco just because he is a Juco and has some experience. You have to hit on that Juco, or you may as well take a high school kid to develop for the next 3-4 years. You don't take the Juco with hopes that he is good his senior year. In a normal year of 25, we would usually take a few Jucos anyway, so really the 7 is more like 10/32.

Talk about making the discussion difficult.

10/32 is fine with me also. You?
