Granted it is not even mid-July yet, but I am a little surprised at how few in-state prospects have received offers from Kiffin and co. especially given his emphasis that he was going to make sure and keep in-state kids at home. As someone that follows recruiting somewhat closely (but not nearly as much as rex, sab, eric, etc) does anyone else not find it weird that schools like Ole Miss and Alabama have offered players that we still haven't? Sure we can just assume that "Kiffin has a plan" but I'm beginning to get a little weary at how few players we have offered and how selective Kiffin has been, especially TN boys that apparently are good enough to get offered by other SEC schools and have clearly stated that they grew up Vol fans....

I suspect many fans will end up surprised at how closely Kiffin does some things like the previous head coach. Just a guess.

several reasons i attribute to this. 1) TN isnt loaded with talent this year. we got JSmith. that makes me happy. next year there will be a larger talent pool and we will take advantage of it. 2) other schools have had a head start in recruiting. as i said, next year we will be ahead in recruiting as im sure we are already scouting plenty of instate talent. 3) some TN prospects (James Stone i believe is a big one) are still under evaluation and have or may get an offer soon enough.

plus, we may (however i think its a longshot) still have a hand in the Brunetti decision. keon williams is another option we have shown interest in.

here is what I have to say to someone who doesnt appreciate sarcasm:

:shaking2:

Maybe "recognize" instead of "appreciate". :) It's hard to tell on message boards sometimes. And believe it or not, there are some here who would make your statement and absolutely mean it! Beats all I've ever seen.

I honestly think that the staff saying that was really just coach speak and playing to the fan base. I think what they really mean is that they're going to go after the players that they really want hard. However, that hasn't worked with some of their prime targets (Marlon Brown, Justin Maclin, Keiwone Malone, etc.). But this staff was behind on working on those guys.

Also, Memphis is always hard. Remember that there are 7, count em, 7, SEC schools that are closer to Memphis than UT is.

We will not recruit a kid unless they are good enough. No need on using a scholarship on a player they know will sit in the bench. There are kids out there that are better than a lot of our instate kids

I think he meant putting a fence around our most coveted players...which we have not quite done. Macklin is gone and Brown last year. We have yet to acquire Stone.

IMHO it will be more important to put the fence around 2011. TN will have an incredible class next recruiting season, meaning the state of TN will be STACKED in 2011

MDB is correct, I honestly don't give a crap if we recruit local kids or kids from Tennessee. I just want the best kids that fit this system. I mean I saw both Rogers kids play in HS and also saw Tyler Maples play as well and Maples was twice as good as both of them and never saw the field. So recruiting kids just cause their local isn't a big deal. There have only been a couple kids we lost in the last few years that really have panned out for other schools....Golden Tate and Patrick Turner

Agreed.

There are only two kids we seem to want that are instate kids. That would be Maclin and Stone. We may be also trying to get Hunter Long but he isn't coming.

We are trying to keep the top players here. We aren't going to pass up a better player just to take a instate kid. Which only makes sense. I do think you will see more instate kids walking on though if this staff keeps reaching out to TN high school coaches. Which we will help. Nebraska done that for years. But it takes time and we are only getting started right now.

I would have to disagree with this statement as do most of the recruiting sites, not that I put much stock into them. But I have also seen all of them play, and the Rogers bro's, especially Zach, were more talented than Tyler, at least coming out of high school.

Zach Rogers
Rivals - 5.7, 3 star, #54 wr

Scout - 3 star, #56 wr

Espn - 79 score, #32 wr

Austin Rogers
Rivals - 5.5, 3 star, #56 wr

Scout - 3 star. #91 wr

Tyler Maples
Rivals - 5.5, 3 star, NR as wr

Scout - 3 star, NR as wr

Espn - 71 score, #139

Patrick Willis, Harrison Smith, Dont'a Hightower and Micheal Oher would all have been nice to keep in-state

But it appears that the issue at hand is when we don't get the out of state kids with "better talent" in consequently miss out on the in-state kids as well.... I mean it is what it is, but I find it surprising that someone that emphasized putting a fence around Tennessee has not even offered some of the state's best players, while many other SEC schools (and not just vandy but Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, etc) have offered them.

I'm kinda surprised you included Harrison Smith in that group... The kid is definitely very good, and was a stud at Catholic, but do you think his skill level is on par with the rest of those guys or was he just someone that came to mind when you were thinking about good college players from the state that didn't go to UT?

Harrison Smith was never going to come here. I still don't think he's that great though. I think it speaks volumes about where ND's talent is now that he's expected to be a contributor.

Real question is why haven't we seen Orgeron's name with any of these recruits? When's he gonna get us that top tier guy?

It seems as though our all star recruiter is Gran

Here is my thoughts. Just because players are rated in the top 10 in Tennessee, doesn't mean Kiffin thinks they are good enough to offer a scholarship. He said he was going to put a fence around Tennessee, but he probably really meant for the players that he actually wants. There are several guys currently in the Tennessee top 10 that UT hasn't even offered, and probably won't. If we can go elsewhere in the country and get a LB or whatever position that has 5* talent, why should we settle for the same player with 3* talent just because you want to keep him in state. When I say 5* talent, I mean in our coaches eyes, not what the scouts actually rank them. We will lose some in state guys to other schools that we really want, but some we will never offer and they will have no choice but to go elsewhere. JMO.
