Fishing in Tennessee

Why is it frowned upon?

because the smokies have a lot of small streams that guys spend a **** ton of money on gear (5 piece traveling or bamboo rod can exceed 500.00) and time every year to research, hike in, on, and sight fish...with minute sized tippets/sized #20 midge patterns (they spent all morning tying) at the exact time of hatch for a chance to catch Tennessee's only native 'trout' which is actually a Char.

that's why when you grab a worm out of ground guys might get irritated. personally for me?! if it catches fish and you enjoy it. who cares? as long as its legal...some fisheries, especially out west are articial only. the school of thought is youre teaching fish to only eat live bait which makes it harder for us fly fishermen.

We have some places here in NE Georgia that are like that, no live bait.

nice looking, healthy largemouth my friend. maybe not a hog by florida standards per se, but damn impressive nonetheless. i say that and i fished all day fri-sat on watauga lake (aka the dead sea) and hooked one smallmouth, who got off close to my kayak. personally i think LMB and SMB are some of the prettiest freshwater species.

id kill for a day like that my friend!

take your kayak and get on the clinch river, you can get on it at the Va/Tn line just a bit north of Kingsport, just be sure your on the Tn side, before you start fishing, there are places to drop in and take it out, which does mean you need a friend and another vehicle

there are places to pitch a tent for the week end,we sunk a metal john boat on one trip :) after we righted it and kept fishing,we were picking up gear all day long as we went down the river

that was were we caught a bunch of red eye and smallies

we went grampus or Hellgrammites seining and would fish where we got them for a while, the fish would come to where we were seining and be down river, getting the ones that got by us and then we would go down the river with them and use em as live bait

the small mouth loved them,I caught the red eyes on a red and white rooster tail,I usually use the grey/sliver and white ones for the smallies, but lost em all uuuh due to mean ass rocks and misplaced tree limbs and had a couple of those left in the ole tackle box

I've only fished watauga a couple of times, years ago and didn't have no luck, but I think it is more of a trout lake,of course I'm probably wrong on that

ive fished the 'Hooch before. nice area. hard to access. always wanted to take my fld rod back down south where the lakes are super shallow and the Florida strain Largemouth pop gets shnshine year round. Stocking programs in the 80's really helped push median size pop's over 3lbs.

My in laws family live in Birmingham. One of them showed me a haul of 4-5 lbers. Up here thats a fish of a lifetime. downthere thats above average.

On a fly, just like those guys who 'flip' can cast in and around structure and catch large fish. the shallower, warmer water seems to lend itself to better fly presentation for bass. Most lake patterns are tied with floating deer hair, unless fished with a sinking line will only dice six inches below the water. the lakes doen south seems to be more like dammed shallow rivers

Did you fish the Hooch below the lake or above it? Just wondering. Both have been part of my stomping grounds for quite a few years now

Ok... maybe one needs to have a bit of red neck in him to have learned this one. It is also frowned upon by fish and game.

I learned this in the Smokies fishing a small stream... fishing partner searched near the stream for a Y-shaped twig, snapped it open at the Y, and dug out a small insect (worm like)... fish apparently enjoy this a lot.

there probably mad that your jerking limbs off of a tree :)

oh we were camping and fishing at Fall creek Falls, years ago and the Ranger stopped us asked where we got the fire wood that had been cut up with a chain saw at

it was in the dark on a Friday night and we were dragging fire wood back to the camp site,i told the ranger to check us out all we had was a pocket knife between us lol

if you ever camp out there,be ware of the skunks and coons at night :)

and what kind of a critter were you digging out of it ?

I haven't, but a friend at church does. He does good there, but heck he caught 2 9+ lb trout in the middle of town (Helen) last year. He's a young guy, but expert at trout fishing. That's the first thing I'll probably do in a few weeks when I'm off crutches.

Next time your around Helen, find you a spot on the Sequoia river. Its just outside of Helen, and the best trout fishing I've personally experienced. There's several spots you can fish below what they call the Mark of the Potter, and Ted Turner's place. That store, and Ted stock big trout that wash down river a lot despite their nets. I've caught them!

Couple of my family members deposed an expert, in Atl area. This person had a home, which at the time was for sale. Said you drive several miles in, to a multi-story mansion that overlooks the entire area.

Funny, there is straight poverty in and around that area. But, starting at Cherokee area headin south. There is a ton of money. its mind boggling.

i had the fortune of fishing the firehole, madison, and gallatin near Big Sky. Close to Bozeman...fyi is one of the most beautiful places ive ever been. Am I correct, that Ted owns the entire town of Bozeman, MT?

I fished right in your backyard on Saturday then. We camped out in the WMA Friday night and got some fishing in Saturday morning. Only caught a rainbow each but we didn't fish all that hard this time. Love it up there.

We aught to hook up and do some fishing one of these days Joe. I'm pretty sure we've talked before on here about fishing North GA. Probably in this very thread :)

I haven't seen it myself but apparently they open up the dam a couple times a year and let people kayak on the much higher water levels. I've been meaning to find out when they do it for a few years now but I haven't got to it yet. Haven't really done much fishing in that area though

I'm not sure out there, but he owns 90+ acres here in Habersham county Georgia also.

Sounds good to me. There's a couple of spots around here I have luck at!

thats awesome. as it should be.

Purists... Go read your copy of "The Compleat Angler"

JK  I enjoy catching trout on a fly once in a while and really like the feeling of tricking that mama bass into eating something plastic, or busting the top of the water. But at the same time, there's always a time to throw a worm with a float too. I just love catching em.

Obviously if there are regulations though, they are in place for a reason and should be followed. The worst thing about a lot of fishermen, maybe most notably bait fishermen, is the trash left behind. Nothing drives me crazier
