After adding his name to the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday, Auburn defensive lineman
Marquis Robinson went on back-to-back official visits to Missouri and Tennessee over the past few days. He returned to Auburn on Sunday with plenty to think about and potentially not much time to weigh his options.
Robinson, a freshman who redshirted with the Tigers during the 2021 season, said his official visit to Tennessee on Saturday and Sunday was “great.” But if he wants to attend spring-semester classes there, he will have to make his college decision in time to register for classes on Monday, and he’s not simply choosing between the Vols and the Tigers despite his back-to-back official visits.
I was stressed out on the car ride home just thinking about it.”
Between the two schools he visited over the weekend, he hinted that Tennessee might have the upper hand over Missouri coming off his weekend visits.
“Missouri — I don’t want to say nothing bad about any school, for real,” Robinson said. “But I will say there’s a difference in Missouri and Tennessee — I mean, big difference. Facilities and, like, the way Missouri runs their staff and the strength staff and the way Tennessee runs it is totally different.”
Robinson added that he’s not ready to “count Missouri out.” But he admitted “it does kind of look like” he’s choosing more between “Ohio State and Tennessee,” along with some of his other options outside the SEC.
A former four-star prospect from Milton (Fla.) High School, Robinson said he’s currently weighing the chance to stay in the SEC against the other schools that also have reached out to him over the past few days. He said he’s still gathering information on his possible opportunities with other schools while also reflecting on his trips to Tennessee and Missouri.
“I’m just going to wait and see (Monday) for the SEC part — make sure I still want to play in the SEC,” he said. “No doubt I do. But, I mean, I don’t want to rush a decision that I’m not sure on, so I’ll wait before I’ll rush.”
Robinson committed to Auburn in August 2020, during Tennessee defensive line coach
Rodney Garner’s previous stint with the Tigers. Robinson never got a chance to play for Garner at Auburn, and he now has an opportunity to reunite with Garner at Tennessee.
But that’s far from the only reason Robinson enjoyed his visit with the Vols this weekend.
“It was great,” he said. “I like Coach (Josh) Heupel. He’s a good guy. I met his family. They were great. (Defensive coordinator Tim) Banks, he’s a cool guy. He’s very relatable, too. Coach G, obviously, he recruited me at Auburn.
“I like the strength staff. They’re as perfect as it could be. I feel like it’d be a great spot for me. The fans are great. I love the energy. I feed off energy, so I love the energy they bring. Just love Tennessee.”
Robinson said his comfort level with Tennessee’s staff is one of the main reasons he’s strongly considering the Vols.
“I know Coach G, he means good,” said Robinson, who has all four seasons of eligibility remaining after appearing in only one game during the 2021 season. “I know Coach Heupel, he means good. I see he’s trying to change the program around. I mean, for me, with Coach Heupel, I feel like I can connect with Coach Heupel because he’s not one of those guys that’s going to, like, jaw-jerk you the whole time. He’s not one of those type people. He kept it real with me.
“He showed me what it is, and he showed me what it wasn’t. He told me, ‘Tennessee, what you see is what you get,’ and I really like that part, because a lot of schools are trying to sell you, trying to do this, butter it up. They kept it just as real as it could be, as raw as it could be. And I liked that about that place.”
Former Tennessee coach
Jeremy Pruitt’s staff gave Robinson a scholarship offer in 2019, going into his junior year of high school, and he said he visited the Vols on a “camp day” in the summer of 2019. That gave him an idea of what to expect when he arrived at Tennessee on Saturday, but he said he still was pleasantly surprised by much of what he saw during his stay in Knoxville.

“It was kind of cold. But, I mean, even with it being cold, I still enjoyed it.”“I knew how the inside of the facilities looked,” Robinson said. “I knew how that looked. But getting to see, like, the campus, the Strip — I mean, it’s crazy. I didn’t think that many people cared about Tennessee football. I didn’t know that there was that many Tennessee football fans, so it was kind of wild. It was great to see.
As for Ohio State, Robinson said the Buckeyes “hit me up” when he was in high school, but he was “not thinking about all the places” he could go at the time.
“But now I’m thinking about what’s best for me,” he added. “I’m not thinking about what’s best for everybody else. It’s just about me right now. And I wanted to see what they have, see what they can help me do. Right now, for me, it’s what place would be best for me to play and get to where I’m trying to go.”

For Robinson, he said, that’s a winning program and, eventually, “the league.”
“Everybody loves to win, and everybody hates to lose, so I want to go somewhere I know, ‘Hey, we’ve got a fair shot at going to the playoffs,’” he said. “I also want to take it to the fact that, whoever I’m playing for, I’ve got to know their reputation. And I have to know the strength staff, they’re doing everything possible to help me get better and put me where I’m trying to go.”
