FL LB DeMario Tolan (LSU commit)

Look, I didn’t expect to have a great class. But, when you have guys you need and it’s down to two teams and coaches and your going against Norvell or Kelly with no staff basically, you got to win. Maybe we will. But not looking good. Facts are facts. Didn’t say fire him. Still love the offense and what he’s done so far but you’ve got to be able to close some and win these battles.
You’re not going to win many recruiting battles when the other guys are using the Jeremy Pruitt recruiting playbook.

Not disagreeing but I think DW misjudged the impact. I don't think he thought high-school players were going to be getting 7 figures. Let's be honest, this NIL is just a facade for high roller boosters to purchase recruits. NIL is a sham.
Bingo. It makes what they've been doing for years not only legal, but now, tax-deductible.

That’s a terrible take. We need an elite defense if we want to win championships. Offenses aren’t getting weaker in this age of football and we play warp speed. More possessions for us equals wins. We need a top ranked defense.
This year’s class is not going to be what gets us to championships. We have to climb the ladder one step at a time.

We’re not out of it for Tolan yet. Not saying for sure we land him but we have a shot here. At least we do have the portal possibilities this year. I don’t think the portal will be this busy year in and out. Lots of coaching moves making the number higher and some big names looking for NIL deals, but I think things will settle down over time. There will be players transfer every year but I think years with lots of coaching changes cause a domino effect for the portal. GBO

We are ranked 18th Nationally. That’s pretty good considering everyone thought we were going to be ranked in the 30s. Also, this staff has pulled some good guys. We will be fine. We have a lot of defensive players returning this year.
Does it only count if they commit the last weekend?

Everyone is going on and on about the coaches not closing on these last few like the ones they already closed on don’t count.
Ohhhh lol I gotcha, slow moment by me.

But yeah I agree, lol, we even have a commit for 2023 already. 2023 was always going to be this coaching staffs class. That’s the class people need to judge these coaches on. They have way more time to get in and recruit those guys plus those guys will get to see 2 years of this staff and the progress of the players.

Either way 2022 signing class / portal transfers are going to end up being good. This staff has shown that they know how to dive into the portal and get immediate help. As shown by this years players almost every portal player contributed significantly at some point minus one or two.

Controversial take:

We shouldn’t be stressing out about winning championships right now.

We are so far away from that and have been now for 13+ years. Nobody’s fixing that anytime soon. Not Heupel. Not Super Coach (even though he’s just a phone call away!). Nobody.

We need to focus on program stability right now above all else. Recruiting solid classes. Getting to bowl games. Getting into the top 25. We do that consistently for 4 or 5 years and all this other stuff will start to come our way.

I agree with the need for stability, but if that staff is focusing on being middle of the pack then that is exactly what the program is going to stay.

Do you realize that a players designation by the recruiting services doesn't mean that's where you play in college right? Elijah Herring will be starting his career on the inside. The kid from KY is likely starting out inside as well. We run a 4-2-5 base defense. We don't technically have OLB's. We have the LEO position, which is an edge rushing DE. The LEO may occasionally drop back in coverage, but is definitely not an OLB.
Against most current offenses, we actually need 1 LB and 3 strong safeties.

The staff can focus on building a championship team with fans having realistic expectations that we aren’t going to be ready to take that step for another few years until all the damage is fixed.

Guys like Orgeron and Miles stepped into messy situations, but they already had the pieces in place to compete nationally.

Alabama had been irrelevant for many years when Saban took over, but he walked into a much better situation than Heupel did talent wise.

It’s one of the things that pissed me off about Butch and Pruitt. For a 3 year period, Butch was on paper recruiting at a level that was needed to return Tennessee to the elite. He just sucked at all the other aspects of the job needed to maintain and nurture that talent. Pruitt’s staff could recruit, but the one we relied on the most was the one picking up takeout from McDonalds.

Plus guys like Saban (Not including Smart since Richt never had a drop off in recruiting) never had to deal with 30+ guys transferring out of the program in one calendar year when they took over, nor did they have to deal with NIL drama overtaking everything else.

So he should have seen that top recruits would be getting this amount of money & put the financial structure in place to fund such in a period of 8-10 months while hiring a football coach & other responsibilities?

Very few HS kids & their families are going to be able to handle that kind of money & still be motivated to work their ass off to develop at the level they should to maximize their potential. I’ve seen 7 figure incomes change people who are accustomed to 6 figure incomes. I know damn well it will impact people who were never close to that kind of money.

True, But there is always a chance for a Lightening in a Bottle Season that would rewrite or flip the Script. For the past 13 years, we have been looking for Sucker Punch Seasons.

Yes, he should have seen that. He was an AD before he was an AD. It wouldn't have taken that much effort to get the ball rolling when he took the job. That doesn't mean I don't think he's a good AD. That doesn't mean I want him fired. It simply means he he made a mistake. Other programs are much more prepared than he had the Vols.

Don't disagree on your second paragraph. I'm glad the athletes are getting some money but I hate the way it's being implemented.

Nobody seems to understand this…… you don’t go from 3-7 and 15 years of being made fun to Georgia/Alabama over night…. It’s a process.

And for the record, everyone is still making fun of Georgia and they beat everyone except the inbred elephants. So some people will still be complaining when we're winning 92% of our games.

who is making fun of GA? Other than the Bama bang little brother, we have no room to talk about them.

Here we go...the seeds of discontent are being spread.

Look...we've had "good" recruiters, and they have galactically sucked ass at literally every other aspect of the job, so give me great coaching, scheming and development, win games and see what happens.

I also am not going to blame coaches when no money will be spent...that is completely out of their hands.
