FL LB DeMario Tolan (LSU commit)

Stoops brought stability to UK. They're now on the threshold of their 2nd 10 win season in the last 4 years. Likewise to Ms State under Mullen. They averaged 8 wins a year from 2010-2013 that finally culminated in a 10 win season and a (brief) No. 1 ranking in 2014. Butch actually recruited well despite being "stagnant." Had he not been a garbage human, he might still be here. He brought the most consistent success we've seen since the early 2000's.

Stability shouldn't be discounted. UT simply isn't what it used to be in the eyes of recruits. We're going to have to build up this brand again. And it's likely going to take longer than 2-3 seasons to do that.
Butch benefitted from a great legacy and in state class and it snowballed from there. Butch is likely out sooner if not for Dobbs. Heupel with the talent on that team would have won the East.

Still in the game.

I hope so but in the VQ pod they literally said we lost this one. Which I don’t think they’d be so definitive unless their rivals LSU guy maybe told them that Tolan reaffirmed his commitment during the OV.

I mean, even the fact that UGA is listed as one of the finalists. That’s out of nowhere. Feels like clickbait, moment building stuff.

He, behind Tyre, was my most wanted recruit as this drew to a close so I hate to say it but this feels done.

I'm sorry but what you guys are proposing is a recipe for very stable mediocrity. Stoops has benefited from UT and UF being down... and weak schedules. His every year crossover is MSU. This year they pulled LSU who was in complete disarray. This is the closest he's come to winning the East... and he wasn't close.

I'm not dismissing what he's done at UK. But he's still a 58-53 coach who has in all likelihood hit his ceiling at UK.

Mullen had one great season at MSU after having Prescott fall into his lap much like Dobbs fell into Jones' lap. Otherwise, he never finished better than 4th in the West and averaged 6.5 wins vs 4.8 losses. I'm not sure about you but I won't no part of that kind of "stability" over 9 years.

Whether UT is what it used to be in the eyes of recruits... is actually the point. You have to have a coach that breaks out from the perception that UT is a mediocre, has been, 2nd tier program. You don't get that by "stabilizing" with someone who wins 6-8 games a year.

Maybe. This place is depressing today, though. I’ll take a little bit of hope where I can get it.

Nobody seems to understand this…… you don’t go from 3-7 and 15 years of being made fun to Georgia/Alabama over night…. It’s a process.

People are already talking about how pathetic our class is. I mean the unreal expectations from TN fans is what’s pathetic. Some think because the rest of the TN coaches could recruit Heupel should be able to. Yet they fail to realize what kind of hole Pruitt left Heupel in.

Kid is going to LSU. Wants the attention and his moment in front of the camera again.

Amazing how Kelly could forge a relationship that quickly and get him to sign, without even having a DC or staff.

LB coach is who has the relationship and I think he sticks around

Kind of sounds like you are. Your first paragraph is all true… but he’s doing this at Kentucky.

And the truth is I don’t think Stoops is that great of a coach. (I wouldn’t want him at UT, for instance.) But that just makes the point about stability all the more.

Exactly! I like to think of it as coming out if the 70s into the 80s. Not hopping to the 90s yet!!! Those underdog 80s teams were some of my favorite!!!

I don't think anybody on here is expecting us to beat out UGA or Bama. Some of us just hope/expect to beat out teams like Vandy, LSU, FSU, and Auburn, all of whom had worse seasons than us.

Lifting UK to mediocrity even considering the weak schedule... is an accomplishment. But is that really the kind of "stability" we want at UT?

Bama... has never been patient. LSU has never been patient. UF has never been patient. tOSU has never been patient. Clemson was not patient. All of those programs fired "mediocre", "stable coaches.

I actually think Heupel is the right kind of coach and leader to turn things around. But just like any other competitive enterprise in life... "stable" is a myth. You are either rising or sinking though sometimes you may not recognize the sinking until it is too late... see Butch Jones.

And for the record, everyone is still making fun of Georgia and they beat everyone except the inbred elephants. So some people will still be complaining when we're winning 92% of our games.

Sad thing is every single TN fan would give anything to have UGAs success.

Kelly forged nothing with this kid. If this kid signs with LSU, then he never seriously considered anyone else and therfore was never going to sign with anyone else.

Edit: I want to be clear, I mean NO disrespect to this kid. It's not a shock and there's nothing wrong with a a recruit reaffirming his commitment after looking around.

Think you’re right unless Kelly really dropped the ball this kid was always going to LSU. I think Tennessee has to repair its image and it will take some time.

Yeah just ignore the success right? Recruiting is part of coaching. You can’t us that as a negative. It just so happens that Smart is in a talent rich state. Do you think he would be reeling in these mega classes if he were going 5-7 or 6-6? No he wouldn’t.

If he signs with LSU, then he is doing something most kids don’t. Commit to the school and not the coach. That has to be respected.

No. Didn't do that.

No. But the degree to which it is a "positive" directly relates to how difficult or easy a school's recruiting base is.

UGA always gets talent because there is always a big base of homers in GA. But I didn't say anything about that.

My point was simple. They have the best recruiting situation in the country. They have great instate talent and A LOT of kids who grow up wanting to play for no one but UGA. Any success they have has to be looked at in that context. And if I had the choice between their coach or their current success... and their recruiting base and a guy like Heupel... that's just not a difficult choice.
