Going to be a hell of a project. At least he won’t have many bad habits to beat out.
Do you remember Dallas Thomas? IMO, he was the last really good OT UT has had. He was a 3rd team All American and 2nd team All SEC in '12.

He was a 6'6" 253 lb OL. He was given 3* and didn't really impress anyone. UT and Ole Miss were his only SEC offers.

The recruiting sites are better at some positions than others. The OL is particularly hard for them to predict in part because undersized, athletic guys often gain muscle more easily than guys who are already big... and still maintain their athleticism.

There were 9 OL's taken in the first 2 rounds of the draft. I didn't go any further than that. Four or 5 were 3* recruits. One was a 2* recruit.

In many cases, the best OL's are built... not found.

You didn’t think Ja’Wuan James was “really good”?

Did I read correctly that he's never actually played the position? If so, I hope he works out. Seems like a risky take. Gonna take some time to teach.

No you didn’t. He played last season at OT...after previously focusing on basketball.

Edit: I’m wrong. Brand new to the position...apologies Weez

I was more meaning he’s played football for one year and never on the OL.

All I’m saying is Butch Jones loved getting OTs that had to gain 40-50lbs to play in the SEC. Almost none of them panned out.

Pruitt came and we started signing SEC sized OTs and we all rejoiced about how signing guys who had to transform their bodies was over.

So you’ll have to excuse me if I’ve got reservations about this. I don’t know his weight other than what is listed on 247. It sounds like he’s light AND raw. Definitely a project.

I’m all about trusting Heupel and I think we have a top of the light OL coach. But I can’t blind homer boom all considered.

I lean this way. Undersized linemen are always a risk. You're trusting they can bulk up. Add to that he's never played the position we've recruited him to play. I'm not saying he won't work out. I really hope he does. But it would be foolish to ignore obvious shortcomings IMO.
