Velus will be a starter in the slot. Dude runs a 4.33 and has the fastest shuttle of anyone on the team by a mile.Jmo
- Palmer will be our go-to big play guy
- Johnson will be our most consistent/possession receiver
- Keyton will be 3rd in line, but have some big plays
- Gibbs and the freshmen split the rest
Like our DL, I'm starting to like our WR depth. I just question how many dudes we have ready this year.
Shorts and shirt 40 times are fine, but his production has been pretty lackluster. Hasn't been higher than 4th in receptions at USC any season. 6 catches last year. Nice return specialist though.Velus will be a starter in the slot. Dude runs a 4.33 and has the fastest shuttle of anyone on the team by a mile.
He didn’t play because Tee left and after that the coaches favored the other 3 over him because of politics.. boosters wanted Cali kids to get the playing time so Helton pretty much stonewalled him. It’s almost as bad out there with boosters having a say-so as it was here with Butch but they don’t have a ton of top 25 SEC teams on the schedule to kill them.. and they have 5 stars all over the roster because it’s USC and top talent goes there by defaultShorts and shirt 40 times are fine, but his production has been pretty lackluster. Maybe he starts, but I think it would be more because other guys not stepping up - Johnson mostly, maybe Gibbs.
Sorry for double post. I think this kid is going to be special. The sky’s the limit for him providing he puts in the work and keeps his head on straight. Super excited about this kid. Homerun, Decade of the VolsWideman will be freshman all american and will be our #1 receiver by midseason.
Well, assuming we find a qb who can actually hit a receiver in stride instead of just tossing up 50-50 balls, or throwing it 15 yards out of bounds.
Not hard to see why the USCw coaches would favor Michael Pittman, Tyler Vaughbs, and Amon-Ra St. Brown over Jones. He didn’t play because Tee left and after that the coaches favored the other 3 over him because of politics.. boosters wanted Cali kids to get the playing time so Helton pretty much stonewalled him. Basically I think Velus is actually one of the best athletes in the country and is good enough to play in the league, but was simply a victim of not getting an actual fair shot. Especially when Tee (his main recruiter and the only reason he went out there) left to come back here.
I have high hopes for Keyton, alsoI don’t see that many TDs year one because of numbers. Palmer/Gibbs/BJ/Keyton/jones will probably be maim rotation to start yr. also competing with this sick recruiting class at position. I could see 4-6 Tds as possibility.
I think the breakout guy is Keyton. I think he could have a really big yr.

I don't mean to be negative toward anyone's "true 4.3" times, but according to various reports we have:By a mile you say? Maybe you should check on the actual fastest player on the team. Hyatt will have the biggest impact IMO. For one reason... SPEED. Even if he isn't actually catching the ball. The distraction of his speed on the field will open things up for everyone!
Sometimes I fell like the times at The Opening are just a little too good to be true as well. Maybe they calibrate the clock just a hair faster than normal....crazier things have happened.I don't mean to be negative toward anyone's "true 4.3" times, but according to various reports we have:
Hyatt 4.31
VJJ 4.33
Holiday 4.38
I think there is 1 more in the 4.3 range
If we really have 3 or 4 guys with on-field 4.3 speed, then we should have an NFL level speed WR corps.
Color me skeptical of all these times and how they translate to the field. I've heard similar things before as well - Byrd, Chandler, etc without much real-world return.
Meanwhile, JJ and Callaway were out there with 4.6 or whatever times murdering people. There is a lot more to football than track times.
The Opening itself uses laser and motion-timed 40s, same as the combine.Sometimes I fell like the times at The Opening are just a little too good to be true as well. Maybe they calibrate the clock just a hair faster than normal....crazier things have happened.
And its not a bad strategy to ensure youre gonna get the top talent at camps. If I was a 4.45 guy and I could go clock a laser 4.39 and move up 100 spots, why not?
Even a laser time still runs on a clock. The Opening itself uses laser and motion-timed 40s, same as the combine.
I question others, especially self-reported and hand-timed numbers. Back in the day, before The Opening, you'd actually see players get "slower" from HS to the combine lol.
Either way, I question how well shorts and shirts times relate to pads and cleats, especially on smaller frames.
Watch Hyatt's film his 40 definitely translates to the field. His HS stats are out of this world. A TD every 3 touches. Go watch his film, and tell me that's not world class speed.I don't mean to be negative toward anyone's "true 4.3" times, but according to various reports we have:

Hyatt is truly a 4.3 guy. They claimed he ran like a 4.28/4.29 before clocking the 4.31 time as well.Sometimes I fell like the times at The Opening are just a little too good to be true as well. Maybe they calibrate the clock just a hair faster than normal....crazier things have happened.

If I had to use my best guess I’d sayThe Opening itself uses laser and motion-timed 40s, same as the combine.
