Florida on Fire

The top programs will continue their dominance. The rest of us are in a stew of sniping each other's players every December.
How do you get to be one of these top programs you speak of and their dominance?
Simple answer NIL $$$$$$$$$$$$

College football is forever changed. For the good? You tell me! Is transfer portal good or bad. Is NIL good or bad?

I'm 66 and 1/2 years old now. I DO remember when college football was more or less a pickup game between two schools and their students. It wasn't an NFL pre-school as it is today and nobody in it for $$$ (much along the same lines as the Rugby (non sanctioned by the schools) these days. NIL and transfer portal defiantly moved the "school spirit" index into the world of "I'm playing for me, not you". Honestly I liked the days when the bowl games meant something and the players didn't "opt out". Seems the concept of "team" is diluted, because if you were a good player and your team needed you, you wouldn't dare "opt out".

OK, I'm old and tired and by the way, while your at it, GET OFF MY LAWN!! (right?). (It's tough being a boomer)

CFB has not been more or less a pickup game between students at 2 schools since probably the 1920s.

It's debatable, but the modern era of the game began on June 27, 1984, when the SCOTUS ruled that conferences could negotiate their own TV contracts. Once cable TV money started entering the sport (due to fan demand, by the way) in seemingly ever-increasing amounts, things were always going to be different.

I was elementary school age in the early 60's and my Dad went to UT. Yep, we pine of the old days, and I don't doubt you exactly on the 1920s statement so much, but it was much different then. The BAD NEWS was that the SEC was slow to bring African Americans on board, and proudly UT led the way, with Lester McClain as a receiver. One VFL we wouldn't have had was Condredge Holloway, who grew up in my home town of Huntsville Alabama. Bear Bryant told him straight up "Son, Alabama isn't ready for a black quarterback" so he ended up with Bill Battle in Knoxville and dedicated the rest of his career promoting UT football.

It was definitely different. The Bowl games were pretty much New Years day with a few exceptions. Fewer bowls, which made making it to a bowl more meaningful. Cotton, Sugar, Rose, Orange all on the same day and by the time the Orange bowl was over on New Year's night, college football was done for the year. We will never return to that model, but it wasn't bad. There were so few bowls that they were all meaningful. Those days are gone forever, but it WAS different. Better? dunno. Maybe just pining over my childhood days of watching football.

By the way.. Did you know that John Ward's color commentator Bill Anderson played on Vince Lomardi's super bowl 1 team? Along with Bill Curry, who played for Bama and coached there and Kentucky. Hat's off to Bill Anderson.

In the games I watched, Pearsall and Etienne were the Florida offense. I wonder if Etienne is looking for a higher profile team, championship ring, more money, or if the team culture has turned so negative that everyone who can is bailing.

My guess is he wants one good year with a top team to raise his draft stock and then he is gone.

But we can still make fun of Florida right?

These aren't so-so players they are losing, they are some of their best starters.

So how has the transfer portal tidal wave affected FLs 24 recruiting class. Is it still holding up?

I read somewhere that literally half of Napier’s first signing class has entered the portal.

Heupel's '21 class looks even worse. way way worse.

Only Jaylen Wright is still here from signing as a Freshman.

Milton, Hadden, and Turnage WERE the only three transfers still on from that team.

Its incredibly likely that we will not have a single 4th year player on our team next year who started their career at UT.
