Several older people went there for lunch or early dinner. It was a gathering place for them.

The Ryans and Food Lion both closing is around 75-100 jobs lost.

I don't know of any chains closing these large of numbers since 1985-1995.

Circuit city closed a 100 plus stores a few years ago to stave off death, then proceeded to die shortly after.

Food Lion Sucks

I went to a food lion while at the beach a few years back to get food. I went to the deli to get some sammich meat. I said, "give me a half pound of that turkey". She said, "you don't want that" and shook her head. I then asked for the roast beef and she said I didn't want that either.
I actually asked her if I was on candid camera.

Yes, I had forgot about them. They had just opened a new store in East Knoxville and closed it shortly after opening. I thought that was an odd move by a corporation.

we're overrun with FL's around here. They've tried to remodel them and make them a bit more upscale but it still doesn't really work. Not terrible but they're so close we use them for quick trips

I've got 2 Publix stores and 3 Krogers within 10 minutes of my house. I'm thinking of suing Planning and Zoning over my obesity.

Kmart, Sears, Circuit City

Sears and Kmart was just announced a few months ago.
What I was meaning by my post is there has not been these types of closing since the 90's. Another sign of a bad economy

Dang! Are you serious??? Now that the Food Lion is closing, closest to me is minimum of 15 minutes away. Next one is at least 25-30.

No doubt about it. I'm on the road all the time and I constantly marvel at the amount of vacant commercial space. Inventory is so high that it will be years before the construction industry to recovers.

We've got HyVee, Safeway, and Shnucks here. All are thriving surrounded by several Walmarts and Target SuperCenters. HyVee is amazing. I have 2 within 5 minutes of me and a Walmart 3 minutes away. I never go to Walmart. I go to Target every once in a while for their pre-made deli sandwiches. I'm going to miss the convenience when I move to the middle of nowhere for school.

I can't believe how quickly y'all can get to a grocery store. There is a fresh produce place that is AWESOME on my way home from work. If I had a meat market, I'd be in heaven.

I loved hyvee when I lived in missouri. I wish I had one of those. Im a minister and one of the girls that was in our youth is at etsu and lost her job in this deal. We have a small local owned grocery and I like it a lot. The closest chain is a food lion and its 25the mins away.

Schnucks(owned by Alberton's I think) just closed their stores here in Memphis a couple months ago. I heard Publix wanted to by them, but Kroger beat them to it. No other major grocery chain in Memphis other than Kroger.

Did Shoney's close down a bunch of stores, also?

I don't know that they have closed any recently. They may still be closing some stores. Shoney's has gone through some tough times for a long time.
They use to be Shoney's Big Boy. IIRC, they split up in the 80's or 90's that resulted in some closings or name change.
I believe they bankrupted and been sold a couple of times which resulted in more closings.
