They have Kroger here, but they are called Fred Meyer. Quite a bit higher then Walmart

I still prefer shopping at Kroger. I'd shop at Food City more often if they didn't hire dum-bass teenagers to work the registers.

Many years ago Food Lion got caught (on one of the news magazine shows IIRC) for selling old meat. I think they are an NC based food store.

I know around here, Publix is the chain that is eating everyone's lunch - not Walmart.

Same here in north AL.

The Food Lion is closing in my town,
The Ryans closed last week with no warning. It was in the local newspaper Ryans closed 84 locations.

Do you live in Oak Ridge? I grew up there and my folks still live there. Heard from my mom about the Ryans closing with no warning. Sad to hear about all of OR's stores shutting down - Sears, Ryans, Food Lion.

I can't believe how quickly y'all can get to a grocery store. There is a fresh produce place that is AWESOME on my way home from work. If I had a meat market, I'd be in heaven.
That's how I started doing all of my shopping. There are two farmer's markets within walking distance of my place open about 9 months a year. Other than that, it's a food co-op or New Seasons (like a local version of Whole Foods but it looks like a regular grocery store inside)

Those things are f'n everywhere. Can't stand anywhere in this state without being able to throw a rock and hit a Freddy's. Good wine selection, I'll give them that.

Retail has been going through massive downsizing for a while, it seems to me. I quick Google search found the following partial list (I only copied the top ones) just from 2011 alone. The number represents the number of stores closed:

405 Blockbuster
633 Borders
200 GameStop
189 Gap
160 f.y.e.
117 Anchor Blue
117 Foot Locker
100 Talbot's
71 A.J. Wright
69 Metropark
63 Friendly's
60 Rite Aid
52 Destination Maternity
50 Abercrombie & Fitch
50 Hot Topic
45 Big Lots
45 Family Dollar

Full list is here: Complete and Ongoing List of Retail Chains Downsizing or Going Out of Business - 2011 U.S. Retail Industry Store Closings and Liquidations Roundup

They built a nice one here (parquet floor in the produce, bakery, and butcher sections; build your own 6-pack; etc.)less than two years ago and it's closing. Always full of customers and the best prices and quality meat from any of the local chains. I've heard management believes they have overstretched their limits and are shutting many down, all in Georgia.

That's funny because in most towns, Food Lion is always more expensive than WalMart or Kroger

When I lived in upper East Tn, I shopped at Food City most of the time because it was much more prominent there than Kroger.

I buy my meat at Johnny's Meat Market. Veggies come from the farmer's market in the summer and HyVee in the fall. HyVee is the closest to being local as we have in this city.

It's all about Aldi's these days.

Forgot about Aldi's. We have them here. You get what you pay for, is all I can say about them. Been there several times, gotten several items, and they all tasted like rubbish. I don't care how broke I am, I'm not buying anything from Aldi's again.

I agree with everything but your last part. I was broke enough to find out that statement isn't true of me.

It kept me alive during college, but I'm a simple man.

Food Lion procured land and built the building near my house last year.... They never moved in... Just sitting there empty.
