I am a huge UT fan who lives in GA and is from MI... Just talked to UM Grad (best friend) who said that the Athletic dept is losing over 1 million dollars every year because the govt closed competition on the power grid in 2008. That money could really help many athletic programs!

I remember when Tennessee was voting on this issue around 1999, and we went the way of competition (apparently good for the athletic dept!)

I am a capitalist and believe in competition.. Volnation, Help our MI brothers out if you care to... This issue could come up in TN again, and we should help set a precedence. Click below if interested!

Electric Competition for Michigan NOW!

The free-market will always beat out Govt controls ..........every single time. It doesn't take long to figure that out, its just a matter of how far in the Govt can get to impede the progress. They try hard to do this so they can show capitalism as a failed attempt.

Since the vast majority of Electric in Tennessee is produced by burning coal, my guess is the only way to stop increasing electric prices is to fire the politicians who vote for Cap and Trade.

That said, how does this make or cost the athletic department a million bucks?

Well said Rock33. Socialism and totalitarianism have never worked for long and are oppressive to the human spirit and destructive to invention and innovation! We didn't get to be the wealthiest, most powerful and most envied nation in the world by having the government lead us like sheep. It was done through the desire to capitalize and the American dream of the ability to become rich regardless of your background.

GO VOLS!

You do understand that the United States hasn't been a true capitalist nation since World War II don't you?

You do understand that I answered that in my original statement ............. Weak, you must not be a trial lawyer. What part of "Govt tries to impede" didn't you grasp ?

Nah, he's a secret Kenyan citizen employee of liberal elites headed by George Soros and the Legion of Doom.
And the USA hasn't been a pure capitalistic nation ever, and yeah... a privatized electric grid can actually have a positive effect on prices since the costs can be subsidized from the general funds provided to the agency responsible without needing to make a profit. No company can operate for very long at a loss, and since we're talking about infrastructure I couldn't personally give a damn how it's done as long as it's reliable and cheap.

There is no inherent moral value in any economic system.

Hey, with any luck we can get Enron here in TN to replace TVA! Then they can stick it to TN grannies instead of just the ones in California. Brown-outs sound like a lot of fun.

Now, who is it that TVA is currently competing with, again? Since 1999?

I would also like to point out that Michigan's electricity prices are quite competitive, and it sounds like someone is pulling a number out of their ass... particularly relative to states that opened up competition, such as New Hampshire and California.

This.

The people who keep clamoring for a free market, couldn't stomach an actual FREE market.

These free market crusaders are too busy being big business crusaders to realize that their beloved big businesses have been getting fat on gov't subsidies for decades. I love all the so called conservatives that shop at wal-mart, a store that is the antithesis of their so called theology.

The irony is that the entire state of Tennessee would never have gotten electricity for decades if ever if it weren't for the government instituting the TVA and the REA. The free market didn't see much of a point in investing all that infrastructure.

This makes the second incoherent post you've made. The point is, it is absurd to pretend like the government regulates the economy "to show capitalism as a failed attempt." That doesn't even make sense. There have always been regulations in the economy here; and since WWII, there have been very significant government impediments in the economy. Try grabbing a clue.

From someone in Michigan who loves Tennessee and hates U of M, this thread is pretty accurate...I still have a shirt from after Woodson won the Heisman that says in big orange letters with an orange Heisman trophy "KEEP YOUR STUPID TROPHY!" It was from one of the radio stations in Knoxville, I can't remember which one though, I left Knoxville in '99...anyone else know which shirt this is? It's a great one haha

Having only one electricity option sure doesn't hurt Alabama's athletic program...That I know of anyway.

Try grabbing a newspaper !!! Just because you can trace the beginning of too much Govt to WWII doesn't make it good. Really your just giving a time line to my point. Snarky comments do not make a point, only makes you sound childish and innept......... litigator...:birgits_giggle:

Their rates have gone up 20% in the last 20 months (when they closed competition). Though I can't speak for the UM athletic program, but I assure you this is not a number out of someones ass.

Sounds like you need to join the movement to learn more!
