Doesn't matter. It's just a matter of how much stock do you put in excuses when it's apparent that other teams have injuries too. You don't have to convince me. It's the recruits the staff has to impress, and I'm just saying that excuses only get you so far in recruiting.
Results on the field are king, and that's one key reason we are losing a lot of momentum while other programs are gaining it.
Wow, what team did you watch this year, it sure wasn't UT's LB'ers you're talking about here.
Let's look back:
1. Lost starting MLB Nick Reveiz to torn ACL (who was playing fantastic) early in the season
2. Lost starting MLB #2 Savion Frazier to torn ACL (who originally backed up Rico @ WLB) a few games later
So, we are down to Rico @ WLB without a backup, a redshirt freshman, Herman Lathers, starting @ MLB.
3. Greg King, co-starter @ SLB with the ailing Thompson has season ending injury.
Now we are down to McCoy @ WLB without a backup, Herman Lathers @ MLB with Thornton as a backup, and an often injured (back injury sustained during Florida game, and another injury during Miss game) Thompson @ SLB with I think Shane Reveiz as the backup. All this for the last half of the season.
Okay, I count 5 serviceable LB's for the bowl game (Nelson and Askew redshirted). So, let's say McCoy gets dinged up, sound familiar, now we're down to 4 LB'ers of which one is a walk-on. So we had these 3 in the game against VT when McCoy got hurt, Thornton, Lathers, and Thompson with only Reveiz as the only backup LB'er.
You tell me who in the SEC had that to deal with in the heart of their defense??
We had awful luck in the injury department to the LB'ers that allowed our depth issue to really surface this year. Should help in the future with the experience they got, plus the continued talent we will bring in.
Bottom line, can't scheme what you don't have. Monte's D requires speedy and instinctive LB'ers and we didn't have that in the last half of the season.
