For grins: DC candidates

He’s mad at a college because an AD, 4 AD’s and 13 years ago didn’t hire him? I’ve seen teenage girls hold less of a grudge than Gary P, if he would spurn us over bygones.
Wouldn’t surprise me. Same excuse made when people talk about CJH ever returning to OU.

John Chavis is back in Knoxville. Hum.... Chief had an outstanding career and I love his radio interviews.

Seriously I trust Josh will know what to do. The man is an extreme competitor and is building a top level SEC program at UT. Yes he has Saban, Kelly and Kirby worried. I mean when Josh gets the horses he will run roughshod over Bama and Georgia.

Except Stoops is still around the program and Heupel was fired, not simply passed over for a job. To top it off he wasn’t the problem and wasn’t deserving of being fired; he was a sacrificial lamb. In 3 of their 5 losses they scored 30, 33 and 38. The problem was Mike Stoops defense couldn’t stop anyone yet he was retained.

You throw enough $$$$ and what makes you think he is a GA man. He has been all over this Conference.
He is from Rome GA but has Coached @ TX, Auburn, SC, FL, LSU (under Saban) so never hurts to ask.
I believe that T Banks will be here for 4 years. He will either figure it out or get fired. Not going anywhere.
He played at UGA, coached multiple stops with Kirby; their families are like best friends and vacationed together even when they were at different jobs. He’s not leaving a DC job at his alma mater for UT.

The way TN overlooked him made him really mad. GP has talked about it a few times about TN saying the job was too big for him. He subsequently turned TN down in other job searches after 2008.

They’re in the Big 10. What other teams are they supposed to defend? Still held a current playoff team 19 points under their current average. Our DC gave up 60 to a team that scored 1/10th of that last week and only gave up 35 to a Sun Belt school.
Sure, definitely be an improvement. I don’t think Heupel will make a change. In fact, I’d be willing to bet on it.

so i guess out of my ignorance, someone tell me, when you have no DB's that can cover, no DL that can get pressure, and a shortage of bodies at LB, what is a new coordinator going to do. are you assuming slaughter is just a bottle of potential talent who needs a new coach to make him an all american? i assume you think a new coordinator replaces rodney garner and all is fixed on the line? and i guess a new coach will just sh!t a new MLB. personally, i dont think it matters who is coordinator, everyone thought going in to the season that there was a shortage of talent on defense, and not people think that we have all americans all over the place and it just isnt being coached. i dont know if banks i great or not, i just dont think he has had a fair shot with SEC level talent, since most of our SEC talent on defense is at other schools now
i can answer this. change technique. that is the biggest thing i see missing from our secondary. their technique is bad and so is their position when the ball is thrown in their area. this is why qbs are having passing parties vs us. then....all he really does is try edge pressure. he only stunts with d-lineman and there's never really a delayed blitz. he also mainly blitzes on 3rd down. like damn near every third down instead of getting off the field so the offense can take over, that dummie takes low-reward risks and gets burned on them often. he's really bad at situational defense

You don’t know if he would leave or not. And he is co DC. Money talks.

I’m an optimist and believe Coach Heup is smart enough to know that we need a defense if we are to compete for championships. I believe we might see a change in our defensive coaching staff in the off-season. Just for grins, I looked up the best performing defenses in college football this year…as measured statistically by the NCAA.

You can check out the stats here — NCAA FBS statistics 2022. I encourage you guys to check it out as the numbers are revealing, at least to me.

Defensive metrics I looked at, by team:

3rd down conversion percentage
1st down defense
Passing yards allowed
Red zone defense
Rushing defense
Scoring defense
Team passing efficiency defense
Total defense

A few teams’ defenses rank in the top 10 in almost all of these categories —GA, MI for example. But there are a couple who show up just as frequently in the 10 ten — IL and MN.

IL in particular is conspicuous in their defensive statistics.

IL is…

6th in 3rd down conversion percentage
6th in 1st down defense
7th in Passing yards allowed
19th in Red zone defense
7th in Rushing defense
3rd in Scoring defense
1st in Team passing efficiency defense
2nd in Total defense

If we had that defense, I am confident we would be in the playoffs with reasonable championship aspirations.

There are a handful of other schools present in the top 10 of these categories — e.g Iowa, Boise St., TA&M.

Personally, I have given up on Tim Banks and Willie Martinez. I hope to see them soon move on to greener pastures. So yeah…I’m nosing around looking for their possible replacements. We have a lot of free time here at Pelican Bay…
Have you informed Heupel and White? You better make sure they get on that pronto.

Straight up disrespectful to the fan base there hasn’t been any word out yet about Banks being fired
They're not firing him.. If it was all scheme he probably already would of been. We're just that bad in the back 7 and when the front 4 doesn't get home the back 7 is toast. Problem is Banks is just about out of good will. Let that crapfest continue into early next year and Heupel will have to make a change because people will be over it by then.

South Carolina Is a terrible offensive team. It’s on Banks. I don’t care if he had all walk on. The 30s woulda been embarrassing, but 63? Get out of here. He didn’t even try switching up the D much at all. He’s so content in playing the same defense in certain games and just prays the offensive team stops itself. It’s ridiculous

They've sucked against the pass all year and Carolina didn't even hardly try and run the ball. Only thing they could of done was sell out and blitz every down. For whatever reason they didn't do it. They sent a extra guy some but that was about it. They didn't think Rattler could beat them but that's exactly what he did and bad. Overall though i don't like the bend but don't break style of Banks. He may very well get himself run out of Knoxville.

Illinois is defending Big 10 teams. Nuff said
He was DC under Odom at Mizzou. Some pretty salty defenses iirc. How much of that was him or Odom could be questioned. He coached with Heup at Oklahoma.

Our secondary has a total of 3 4* players. SC has that many 4* dbs in their freshman class alone.

If we have Sal Sunseri level talent at corner, we will continue to get Sal Sunseri level results regardless of who you hire.

While I tend to agree with you about it being time to move on from those guys, I wonder how much of Illinois' success is the schedule they play? They did play well against Michigan yesterday though. I am serious when I ask this, could a B1G DC come here and fix the problems immediately?
Well the one we have now is from Penn St

And that analyst job with the Longhorns is too cush? Watching him roam the sidelines against TCU, the man looked like he needed a home.
