For grins: DC candidates

And like this one, we weren’t loaded with defensive talent but at subsequent stops (like Washington), he didn’t overwhelm with superior scheming imo. He’d be an upgrade to Banks…not arguing otherwise, but how much so I’d be skeptical.
Mr Bray and Co did not give one little tiny 💩 during that game either. That didn’t help.

We are still under a major rebuild on defense. Hopefully everyone improves in the off season and with enough work they can. It would honestly be hard to be much worse. However the right DC to get the most out of them would be appreciated. I can maybe live with Banks for another year but I can't take any more Willie Martinez.

I’m an optimist and believe Coach Heup is smart enough to know that we need a defense if we are to compete for championships. I believe we might see a change in our defensive coaching staff in the off-season. Just for grins, I looked up the best performing defenses in college football this year…as measured statistically by the NCAA.

You can check out the stats here — NCAA FBS statistics 2022. I encourage you guys to check it out as the numbers are revealing, at least to me.

Defensive metrics I looked at, by team:

3rd down conversion percentage
1st down defense
Passing yards allowed
Red zone defense
Rushing defense
Scoring defense
Team passing efficiency defense
Total defense

A few teams’ defenses rank in the top 10 in almost all of these categories —GA, MI for example. But there are a couple who show up just as frequently in the 10 ten — IL and MN.

IL in particular is conspicuous in their defensive statistics.

IL is…

6th in 3rd down conversion percentage
6th in 1st down defense
7th in Passing yards allowed
19th in Red zone defense
7th in Rushing defense
3rd in Scoring defense
1st in Team passing efficiency defense
2nd in Total defense

If we had that defense, I am confident we would be in the playoffs with reasonable championship aspirations.

There are a handful of other schools present in the top 10 of these categories — e.g Iowa, Boise St., TA&M.

Personally, I have given up on Tim Banks and Willie Martinez. I hope to see them soon move on to greener pastures. So yeah…I’m nosing around looking for their possible replacements. We have a lot of free time here at Pelican Bay…
I would make sure Rodney Garner doesn't want the DC before I looked and the new DC would have to want Garner.

Zero reason for Steele to be blue font or even brought into this. No one’s first choice but he’s a VFL, a great recruiter and could out coach Banks in a coma.
Sorry lol
And yes Steele would be better
Ty for putting me on blast

To me the question isn’t can we live with Banks. It’s should we. We have no buyouts we are currently paying, we have a womens basketball team and baseball team that actually make money instead of draining from football resources and ticket sales are through the roof. There’s nothing to stop us from identifying the best DC available and paying whatever it costs. Geoff Collins, Jeff Haffley if he gets fired, or maybe Justin Wilcox or Zack Arnett. When we hired Banks we were broke and had NCAA issues. Now neither of those seem to be the issue. No need to shop off at Dollar General anymore. Do what Ohio State did, identify you’re guy and go and get him.

so i guess out of my ignorance, someone tell me, when you have no DB's that can cover, no DL that can get pressure, and a shortage of bodies at LB, what is a new coordinator going to do. are you assuming slaughter is just a bottle of potential talent who needs a new coach to make him an all american? i assume you think a new coordinator replaces rodney garner and all is fixed on the line? and i guess a new coach will just sh!t a new MLB. personally, i dont think it matters who is coordinator, everyone thought going in to the season that there was a shortage of talent on defense, and not people think that we have all americans all over the place and it just isnt being coached. i dont know if banks i great or not, i just dont think he has had a fair shot with SEC level talent, since most of our SEC talent on defense is at other schools now
I remember a couple years ago we had no talent on offense until they got coached up. Nobody said they would be dominant but there is no excuse for the level we are playing at and the coaches are not putting players in a position to be successful. Sitting back and rushing 4 is not worth paying a DC $1.5M and acting like he isn't responsible

I think I know what you’re saying 🤔, but the D didn’t give up a world of points and the O was capable of putting up much more. Bray was notorious for not being fully involved.
He was and is a mutthead. The only time I was impressed with Wilcox was his stint at Boise State…never since.

If there's some DC guru out there that can be bought, I'm all for throwing down the money. We still have NCAA issues lingering though, and a lack of depth at every level of the defense. So who wants to hitch their wagon here might be a different story.
