For once, timing broke Tennessee's way

No idea why you guys like bashing Fulmer tbh. His record speaks for itself and had the only National and SEC championships for Tennessee in most of our lives. You can never say he wasn't a great recruiter. He would have been fine if they were allowed NIL in his day. I mean, money was always a part of it, just not in the open. Let's be real.
I have no issue with Fulmer the coach, Fulmer the AD was a disaster. He was in over his head and it was not his fault. He loves UT and would do what ever it takes to make it great he just was not prepared to be the AD of a major university.

I disagree. He saw the change in football coming and hired a spread coach (Clawson) to run his I-Form personnel. He just wasnt given enough time to change. You can't change a I-Form team into a spread in one year. I will also add Clawson went on to make Bowling Green and Wake Forest into winning teams, which is remarkable. Fulmer was in the SEC championship game the year before his firing and 3 of his last 6 (IIRC?) at UT had them in that game or tied to go. I'm not sure how that is lazy. How many times since then have they even sniffed making that game?
He stopped r3ec5ruiting, instead sent underlings on his behalf. That among other things shows he got lazy.

I see how Heupel is tearing it up on the recruiting trail and it got me thinking...

Could you imagine trying to recruit in the NIL era with our previous AD's and how much of a mess it would be? Hamilton, Hart or Fulmer would have made this a disaster to try and work with.

Thank the Lord we got an excellent AD with Danny White (and competent HC) right before NIL became legal to help navigate those waters.

Fulmer, Hamilton and Hart were like Regis Philbin in paying buyouts to coaches in the Tennessee version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Hamilton was a great fundraiser.

Fulmer's run started to decline when Rodney Garner left - Period.

NIL with Phil? Dude, he was paying more than UT and Sprire are paying now! Why y'all think Pilot got busted for charging too much for gas?

Know how it ended up?

Yes the recruiting dropped off from previous yrs starting in 2000. Seems Fulmer thought once he won a natty recruits would just come flocking to him. And along with Garner and Cutcliffe leaving as posters stated above. His wife told him to step down after the natty and appears she was right.

He tarnished his reputation with the AD job and was given a free pass for the Pruitt debacle. Should have retired as a HC.

To my memory, only Rocky Marciano had sense enough to retire while still undefeated, and before he was long past his prime.
Fulmer attached himself to the wrong role models.

Yes. I can be happy for our current coach without ever never disparaging Coach Fulmer. Especially considering how good of a recruiter he was in his prime. And the fact that he's responsible for the SEC & National titles that nearly all living Vol fans know about.
Hard to speculate about recruiting 15-25 years ago and tryna bring the discussion to today. I actually think open NIL would have helped Phil. There were several instances from 99-06 where UT came in second for some program changing players from out of state. Up front, legit 💰 could easily have made difference.

I would also add Randy and Donde to the list. Greatest AD in the world cant overcome clowns and buffoons in the schools Administration.
Donde ran a master class on identifying the best candidates and moving fast on the hiring with the backdrop of the scandal and national talking heads preaching our demise. White was second or third on the preferred list and most of us had never heard of him…cept for the UCF NC thing. Signed him to a top contract with built in raises and got him everything he needed. Big fan!

Make no mistake, we were very fortunate the whole Pruitt fiasco happened at the exact moment in time it did, when the personnel losses would be easier to make good through the transfer portal and the infractions were viewed more forgivingly.

I gave you a like but not sure the NCAA was forgiving. A threatened lawsuit helped with that when they saw they couldn't win it.
