Minimum wages and poverty are a moving target though.

Raising the minimum wage will put upward pressure on prices and all that was accomplished is that the $ amount defining poverty has changed.

Poverty cannot be legislated away.

Darn it, you guys are making me agree with him... kidding. :good!:

but, if it's simply a temporary equilibrium imbalance before all things are equalized again, why not just do it since it garners votes and feels so good?

As another plug for the market - when unemployment is low (as it has been for the last decade) we tend to see market wages being above minimum wages since labor is scarce.

On the off chance you aren't being sarcastic (which is rare I know :))

the system is not closed to America - moving the equilibrium target upwards creates inflationary pressures on the US vs the rest of the world.

I don't know of anyone trying to hire at minimum wage.

you astutely caught the sarcasm. Inflation destroys wealth in myriad ways, not just in international situations. Fixed income types get destroyed. Assets lose relative value, because they just can't be repriced like new goods can. Inflation is death to economic systems and it happens very naturally without the socialist tendencies of those panhandling for votes making it worse.

of course not because a small % of the US population even makes it anymore. Exclude the PT high-schoolers and it's even smaller. Further proof that the market could sustain itself without a false floor

So many liberals criticise capitalism, and while it's flawed like everything else in life, name one system that's better. If libs will read their history books, while socialism sounds like a great idea on paper, history teaches us that only a select few see the benefits (usually those in power).

federal minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation and is one of the reasons the census bureau estimates that there are about 35 million people living below the poverty line in our country.

i think bringing minimum wage up to 9.50 right away is probably unrealistic (though not an inherently bad idea), but many cities have raised their own minimum wage beyond the minimum federal guidelines. for example, in san francisco, minumum wage is 9.36/hr, and that covers even restaurant employees who get tips.
You do understand that from a purely theoretical standpoint, minimum wage requirements can never keep up with inflation (since instituting these wages actually causes inflation to increase.)

Never thought of it like that, good point.

:eek:lol:

Maybe I'm just a bad person for realizing the US isn't the world's nanny?

I'm still trying to figure that out myself. I don't understand the fact that while we have billions of dollars worth of problems over here, we are supposed to increase our spending even more money overseas for other people. Screw our people, help the others. Makes no sense to me.

Because the USA sucks, and the UN is the moral authority for the world.

Saying the left wants to do away with democracy is like saying the right want total anarchy.

If you don't think what Hillary is proposing is socialism, then there's really no sense in even debating you. Same with Obama. No one is saying they want a dictatorship, but yes they do want bigger government and programs such as UHC is a perfect example of socialism at work... but by no means is ther her only view that leads people to believe she's a socialist.
