Former Grudenite

Ever since the departure of CPF, I have been an advocate of bringing on a coach with NFL experience. Does anyone have a real understanding of what kind of recruiting Gruden would have done to date for the '14 class? And btw, I am looking forward to a plate full of grilled crow served up by CBJ!
We have the concensus #1 class right now. What could he have done to this point that CBJ hasn't?
SMDH!

could JG have done better to this point? sure, the average player ranking could be higher, currently at 3.46 (while bama's last year was 3.86). could have also brought in a higher ranked '13 class.

would it have happened? no way to know.

I heard Gruden personally called Jones and asked him to come to UT to rebuild the program so he can take over in three years, when he finally gets bored on MNF. Jones is telling recruits they will get to play for Gruden their senior year.

uhhhhmmmm...:good!:

I remember having similar thoughts as a dipsh&t college student when Fulmer was hired, At the time, Bill Parcells and a few other "big names" were out there.

ALL SMOKESCREENS! :)

Let Butch do his thing. He'll be fine!

Guess I'm an idiot, too. I do not ( nor did I ever ) want Gruden here. Just never felt like he was the right guy. Just as a little perspective : When Fulmer's replacement was being sought, from the list of prospects I saw, my first response was " anybody but Kiffin".
Was not excited about Dools - WTF probably describes my first reaction.

or how successful his teams would have been on the field. It is all speculation.

OOOOOH, I DO!!!! Take a look at the dumpster fire he was in charge of in Tampa. Never cracked the top half of the NFL in major offensive statistics, what?? Relied on Monte Kiffin's perennial top-10 defense, what?? Given past performance, it's not speculation. Jon Gruden is GARBAGE.

I reiterate: GFYJG, and stay the HELL away from Knoxville.

"I reiterate: GFYJG, and stay the HELL away from Knoxville."

On Monday Night October 7, 2013, the New York Jets play the Falcons in Atlanta - which is only a four hour drive. Do you think Gruden got with the NFL and planned this so he and his family could drive up to Ktown the next day, buy a big home and become our coach? I'm just saying....

his name would have excited a lot of recruits but it would have depended on his assistants and how hard they would work. I've been surprised at the effort of Jones and staff. I didn't know how hard they might work but they have certainly exceeded what I was fearing, but a lot.

Fulmer's failures were related to recruiting. Over time, assistants tire of the required efforts to recruit to Tennessee. They get lazy and don't work as hard. After viewing that with his staff over many years, I've concluded assistants need to be changed out every 4-6 years at Tennessee. The recruiting grind just tires them out and they are less effective. Can't do complete staff changes but would be more effective to have a coach or two change almost yearly..

I think there is much truth in the above. Our Brand is incredibly important, but it still takes the human touch to bring it home.

On Gruden though - the Grudenite threads were epic, laced with excitement, and some of the best reads outside the season we can ever hope to have.

4 hours away is still too d**n close. I don't want that POS anywhere near Knoxville, lest he pollute our program with his BS. You saw what happened when Dooley let him come around......

"Fulmer's failures were related to recruiting."

LWSVOL - like what you said but I have a different take on this statement, and maybe I am the only one that feels this way.

I feel that every year the Vols have had plenty of talent on the sidelines. Not always the best or the smartest mind you, but talent we have generally had. I strongly grew to dislike Fulmer and Sanders because they didnt use their talents accordingly. Play to your strengths and play away from your weaknesses. But those two just didn't get it IMO and kept hammering away with Johnny Majors 'play it safe' mindsets. Yes recruiting is crucial but ................if you don't like the guys calling the plays and what they are calling, why would you want to play for them?

Although he received alot of criticism, I am almost positive that VolReporter called the Butch Jones thing and said he would be the choice if Gruden turned them down on their last push. Whether that was before or after the Charlie Strong thing I can't remember, but I distinctly remember seeing him saying Butch Jones and me going "who?, this guy is full of it"

In any way, I am very glad Butch is here no matter how it happened and to this point don't think anyone would have did a better job.

It seems you were Vol Reporter or bad memory. Everything he reported, times, dates, locations was all wrong. Only correct info he had was posted only after it was leaked.

That guy had fun at the expense of many "grudenite groupies".

yeah, they still got some players but no where near 90s talent they were getting.. the problem was Fulmer and 1 or 2 assistants were doing the bulk of the work. Certainly game planning, game management and practice were all issues as well.

"is this thread a smokescreen?"

Not intentionally - but things seem to be heating up in Ktown and hey, where there's smoke...
