All the details aren't out, but McKnight wasn't shot for no reason. There was a reason, whether or not that was enough a reason for a justifiable shooing remains to be seen.

Can't shoot (kill) someone just because they're standing outside your car's passenger window, waving their arms and maybe yelling. Being scared shouldn't be considered grounds to shoot.
