I love Fulmer and think he is 2nd in line to Neyland as far as football goes, but the talent evaluations toward the end of his tenure were just brutal.

For the 2009 class that he had committed before he was let go, here is who he was trying use as evidence that he was getting the program turned around:

Taj Boyd - backup QB at Clemson
Jeron Stokes - leaving Michigan
Jarvis Giles - left USC
David Oku - left UT
Jerod Askew - left and no longer plays football
Kevin Revis - left UT
Toney Williams - never played much, career ending injury
Rae Sykes - backup DT not seeing much time at all

Just hard to understand that after the 2007 debacle of a class it looks like 2009 would have been much of the same. Wonder what the falloff in recruiting was from the 90's until 2009.

If Fulmer had stayed this team wouldn't have half the talent that it currently does.

But honestly the 2009 class is as big of a bust at 2007 since Kiffin left, so no matter what 09's class would have stunk.

That is unless we hired Dooley directly after Fulmer...which would have seemed crazy at the time.

Excellent points. We would be drowning in misery right about now had he stayed around.

It would've seemed significantly less crazy than it did after Kiffin. Look at Dooley's record in 2008 and compare it to his record in 2009.

Actually, I thimk the hire would have been well received. Dooley had a great 2008.

It still seemed crazy when we did it.

True, but I think following Fulmer's firing people were expecting a "splash" hire...Dooley at that time would not have been close to that...a year later we had different expectations as to what the hire should be like.

Either way I am glad we have CDD!

Just fyi Fulmer would have never had this problem. He never did and never would have. I dnt care who gets in here and says he sucks and can't do nothing.he had his up and downs in recruiting but if he had a bad year he would have a awesome the next year. With that being said i love what dooley is doing and can't wait for the 3rd!! GBO

He also had a losing (as opposed to loosing) record for each of the last two seasons he coached WITHOUT Cut there to save him. The man had lost his touch and we would be even deeper into the abyss if he had stayed.

Fill Fulmer can win more with less talent than either the NutJob Kiffin or Dooley can win with great talent.

He had his faults, but Fill should be getting more respect from the UT fans than what I witness on a daily basis. Folks here in Rednecksville rip him all the time, but I guess maybe they just are not real bright.

Good dude, heckuva coach. But not perfect. I guess that was his downfall.

Boyd is the starting QB at Clemson. Oku and Askew were wanted by everyone--can't always blame the coach if players don't meet expectations

I still haven't forgot about Fulmer saying on a recruiting show when Marlon Brown signed with Georgia about how he would have signed him. Looks like Marlon is going for bust status as well.

Cutcliffe was amazing your right. I wish he was still there.

I would be more inclined to agree with you if you said "character evaluations" rather than "talent evaluations." All the players listed are athletic.

....I am so glad that we are still beating this subject to death. Lets never let Fulmer rest or Kiffin for that matter. I hope the KNS has a article about Fulmer and Kiffin at least every month for the next twenty years; what they said about UT, football, what they had for dinner, who they may have played, recruited, or what teams they might have beaten or lost to. Did you hear that Fulmer said.................

Everyone here loves what Phil did and respects him for his 90s run but that statement is completely false. Phil was great because of his supporting cast. I honestly see Phil more like a Mark Richt coach. We should of have won more games with the talent we had those years. I dont even want to think what our record would of been last year if we had Phil as our coach

Not only could he win with less talent, he took a preseason #3 ranking in 2005 and won the natio. . . Oh wait. Well at least we beat Vander. . . Oh wait. Nevermind.
