Hey we should all just be grateful that he won a NC in his tenure here and let the man be! Everyone on here acts like they could have done this or that better than Phil! Truth is the man is human and had faults, but who the heck else won us a NC in their tenure here besides GRN? Let the man live in peace, get off his back! Last I checked we weren't and still aren't coaching UT so we have no reasoning behind bad mouthing him! Get a full time job, or a life!

I love Fulmer and think he is 2nd in line to Neyland as far as football goes, but the talent evaluations toward the end of his tenure were just brutal.

For the 2009 class that he had committed before he was let go, here is who he was trying use as evidence that he was getting the program turned around:

Taj Boyd - backup QB at Clemson
Jeron Stokes - leaving Michigan
Jarvis Giles - left USC
David Oku - left UT
Jerod Askew - left and no longer plays football
Kevin Revis - left UT
Toney Williams - never played much, career ending injury
Rae Sykes - backup DT not seeing much time at all

Just hard to understand that after the 2007 debacle of a class it looks like 2009 would have been much of the same. Wonder what the falloff in recruiting was from the 90's until 2009.

I agree. We should have fired Fulmer after his first year. Just a complete disaster. I wish I had those years back and hire a proven coach who could've opened it up more.

If fulmer would have been fire when he should have been we would probably have saban on our sideline. I like Dooley though so np

Toney Williams tranferred to Ball State....NO season ending injury

I think Fulmer and his coaching staff blew it on a lot of players.Their evaluation of talent was horrible from 2002 til he was let go.There were some good players that got drafted high but over all most of the kids they signed in that period never lived up to their expectations.Go back on rivals and look at the 2002 recruiting class. You would think they would at least be conference champions with a class like that.If i'm not mistaking they only won 1 bowl game.

Recruiting actually began to decline in 2002. I know everyone is going to jump on this statement but look at the stats. The team just began to be less productive. Fulmer did have several good years in the recruiting rankings but they just never seemed to produce. He did not like to bring in transfers or JC recruits. He was great in the later eighties and nineties but I feel he was to loyal to his staff in some instances and did not retain the staff that was of the most benefit at other times. Coaching as we all know is very stressful and as the years go buy it burns out a lot of people. It is very important to have high quality assistants that can coach and recruit. The head coach obviously needs to know the game of football but it is also important that he function in the same manner as a CEO of a larger company would. Not only do you need to recruit good players but you need the most qualified assistants you can obtain. This is what has made Sabin so successful in college football. I do not believe Joe P is actually running Penn State nor was Bobby B running Florida State before his departure. The administration at UT as well as most of the fans were just to loyal to make the tough call several years before it was too late. Now we are playing catch up in the best conference in the country with several of the best coaches in the business as competition. I thought Phil was a great coach when he took over for John M and he have a great staff for many years he gave us a national championship the first year of the BCS. The game and the players personalities are different today and did not have the assistant coaches he needed to keep pace in the SEC. One man cannot do it all in the game of college football today.

Everyone here loves what Phil did and respects him for his 90s run but that statement is completely false. Phil was great because of his supporting cast. I honestly see Phil more like a Mark Richt coach. We should of have won more games with the talent we had those years. I dont even want to think what our record would of been last year if we had Phil as our coach

Phil hired his supporting cast. That is part of the job.

I dont mean to argue the point. I like Dooley. I think he is a good coach, and part of being a good coach is hiring the right staff. Charlie Baggett is probably the best hire that he made. Having Charlie's College and Pro experience on the staff is huge, as well as his experience as a recruiter. Awesome hire by Dooley.

I just think that Phil would have recovered. Just my own feeling.

Much better.:salute:

 fair enough. I cant forget where I am posting!!

And furthermore: Dont let the fact that the kid left michigan have any impact on what you think of him as a player. They have had some mass exists from that place lately.

Coaching changes, and going from that nutjob RichRod, to a hardcore discipline guy like hoke is going to run a few people out.

But I dont know the exact circumstances of him leaving um, Im too busy worrying about earthquakes and Coach Summit (seriously on the last one. Love me some Coach Summit)

Was time to move forward with a young, energetic and enthusiastic Coach Dooley! I am happy that Fulmer did a good job and won the National Championship (thanks to Cutcliff) but it was time........ GO VOLS!!!!

Je'Ron Stokes Leaves Michigan. Espn says this guy was up for the Vols till the firing of Fulmer. Any body think this is a guy we might go back after? Just looking for the two cents from the wise.
Scout.com: Je'Ron Stokes Profile

I'm going to say no. The guy didn't make in noise in two years at Michigan, and wasn't going to make any this year either. But hey you never know.

randy sanders is where Phil failed. couldn't coach...couldn't recruit. hate it for him. He was too loyal to him until it was too late.

I regret clicking on this thread. I regret even more, continuing to read it after I realized it was actually a Fulmer thread. You'd think I'd have learned by now, but obviously I haven't. Damn.

I don't regret watching things slowly spiral downward for so long...after the loss in the SEC Champ game to LSU. It makes me appreciate having Dooley and the possibility of what is to come. Fulmer is a great guy in person, but his time had passed. Now, I think like most everyone else I am ready to move on.

By the way, Kiffin did a great job with what he had...despite all his mistakes and the way he left.

I pray Dooley is here to stay. Some people here don't deserve him. The dude is making it happen and I love to see it. We have just come through the worst three years in school history. It's all up hill now!!!

Where VegasVol to throw some stats at the OPs assertion and pontificate on how fulmer wasn't sucking hind tit in all phases of the game last few years prior to his demise.

You forgot Marlon Brown and Josh Nunes.
