Four Guard Line-Ups

It should have been emphasized from the beginning. We are in year 6 and Barnes always talks about pushing the pace but his teams don’t do it. So it’s not just a players thing lol.

They’ve also made a couple nice adjustments on offense. Less emphasis on posts up and midrange game, more emphasis on creating driving lanes. It’s giving UT more space.
Glad to see the players finally learning and understanding what Barnes and staff want them to do...no need for a philosophical change.

There still is need for a change. They can’t completely ditch the offense but they’ve already made adjustments. Less post ups. Faster pace. More emphasis on kick and drive. They beat two non tournament teams. He should ditch the motion offense and go spread pick and roll with Jaden and Keon. And with Kennedy next year.

Wow, wasn’t long ago you were saying we’d lose 1st round, quite the jump in projection.
So do you think it should be static? Changes weekly. Jimmy Dykes and several other media types were hyping us as a Final 4 team earlier in the season.

Lol, Barnes should have had them playing fast all year vs. their methodical 1/2 court motion offense that was a disaster in their 4 losses

They're not posting up less. They're inverting the post, pulling out defenders to follow Fulkerson while Johnson uses his size against smaller guards. You don't always guards using their post abilities in college so it's been fun to see.

If you listen to him that’s what he and his staff have been trying to do, Johnson & Springer also somewhat validated that sentiment.

I think the last two games have shown that our best lineups are ones consisting of SV Keon Jaden JJJ and a big. In my opinion Pons offers the most as the big in the lineup. Crazy to think our best lineup wouldn't feature Fulk, but at this point I think that is the case (which is NOT the same as saying Fulk does not provide value to the team.) Scovi's improved perimeter defense, JJJ's rebounding, Keon and Jaden's penetrations skills, and Yves's post defense all enable this lineup to work well. All five players can hit threes at least somewhat decently, too. Hope this lineup is leaned into in March. The main weaknesses are the lack of a true point guard, but that is true of all our lineups and at least 4 of those players can somewhat fill that role, and rebounding. Yves will really need to step up his rebounding for this lineup to work, but JJJ and Santi being good rebounding guards helps.

Did I dream it or did they say last nite Vescovi was 27 for 28 in FTs in the last 4 minutes of games.

Not a dream. I heard it too. After hitting all 8 of his FTs last night I think he has only missed one FT in the last 4 minutes of games for 2 years. That's insane, especially since he isn't otherwise a high percentage guy (i.e. high 60%). No wonder Barnes wants him on the floor at the end of games.

Vescovi reminds me of Dane Bradshaw...

1) He is not the fastest guy. (I think Vescovi might be a little slower than Bradshaw)
2) Started at point guard, but eventually changed positions (position change upcoming for Vescovi next season)
3) Plays hurt and gets beaten up by Volnation. :^)
4) Fans complained about their turnovers, and granted they both had some.
T/O-min asst-T/O
Bradshaw FR .85 1.17 (Bradshaw was the backup to CJ Watson, )
Vescovi FR .11 1.04 (Half season, no time to learn teammates)
Vescovi SO .12 1.57
5) He is the epitome of Team, before self.
6) He is not flashy, nor spectacular.
7) But is all heart and soul - giving it 100% all the time.
8) They both have a knack for making big plays
Dane was a better defender as a sophomore, but V had less time to develop (coming in mid year).
Vescovi is a much better shooter (3 pt),(according to the statistics) although slower on shot
Vescovi .360 (FR) .398 (SO) vs Bradshaw .222 (FR) .261 (SO) [Bradshaw was a better shooter overall, to date]
Bradshaw was a better on driving to the basket.
Vescovi is significantly better at the FT line 81+ to 58 (Bradshaw

I am just trying to put in to perspective the player Vescovi really is, he is NOT a great point guard. But he is a decent one, maybe even a good one.

Let me say this, he appears to be a really good team player.
He is getting better.
Next year, I expect him to be a very good guard (and competing for time on the floor with Springer and Johnson [if they return .... please!!!!] ) AND a much improved point guard that shares time with KC. [Personally, I think KC becomes the starting point guard about mid way through the season.]
BTW, did you read that Keon saw himself as a forward at the collegiate level. Keon Johnson at power forward? At one time, that was the goal :^)))))) That dunk last night ... well maybe he could!!!

I was disappointed at how they let Ga. pressure get them and get back in the game.We need to learn to respond to that with pressure of our own.

It's going to be the recipe going forward I think. Even when Pons and Fulky get healthy, I'd hope we'll see the majority of the minutes handled by the 4 guard lineup. Just please find an answer for the press and DO NOT depend on Vescovi at the 1 for any real length of time. I'd rather see a rotation of JJJ, Bailey and even KJ at the point instead of Vescovi.

I really don't see Bailey or Keon handling the press any better. In fact Bailey has handled in demonstrably worst in games like Ole Miss

I bet Chandler is the starting point guard game one.

I like SV ok but he runs at least 10 secs off the shot clock just getting the ball to where it needs to be and has been extremely loose with the ball lately. His defense is much much improved and he is an elite rebounder for a guard, his shooting is either hot or cold, when it’s cold it puts our team at a tremendous disadvantage

I guess that depends on what you consider “little difference”. There’s certainly a difference
Yes, but very little. Just look at the Tournament this years. After the first round every game is a toss up if you don't have Baylor or Gonzaga written on your Jersey. I think Ohio State may be number 3 but the wouldn't be more than a three or four point favorite over anyone in the top 25

These are poor takes. SV turns it over less than our other point options and his defense is greatly improved. Obviously he’s not a speedy pg like Jordan Bone but he has other strengths

Take a look at his man coming off the dribble.
I’m not hating on the guy as I respect he and all the players. Plus he is playing out of position and struggles to go right. He gets caught in the air and Barnes himself said V puts the other four on the court in difficult situations both sides of the ball.
V isn’t the only one with deficiencies and does have strengths

I really think Fulky is playing hurt. Have seen him to many times rubbing that wrist that was injured or patting his chest to be taken out. 7 man rotation with 4 out-1in seems to be our most productive line up. Subbing Bailey for the guards and Fulky for Pons at the 5. Maybe an occasional 3-2 when Fulkerson can swing it. The offense definitely doesn't need to run thru the 5 any more.

Anosike or Nkamhoub could play a couple of games at the five to give Fulkerson some rest.

I'm not hating at all, he has a difficult to spell name, but of all the different ways Olivier Nkamhoua's name has been spelled on this board, I think that is the first time I've seen a B in it haha. I generally just stick with ON to be safe

last night it looked like he was playing on cruise control as if the game was over with 8 min left.
He certainly was on cruise control coming down the stretch-- in a positive way-- when he sank those free throws to seal the win.
