It should have been emphasized from the beginning. We are in year 6 and Barnes always talks about pushing the pace but his teams don’t do it. So it’s not just a players thing lol.
They’ve also made a couple nice adjustments on offense. Less emphasis on posts up and midrange game, more emphasis on creating driving lanes. It’s giving UT more space.
Posting this again as have others...good thing CRB has players willing to fall on the sword to cover for his poor coaching. LMAO
You thing two freshmen who are well reported to be great guys are gonna throw a 30 year head coach under the bus? “Look we’ve been telling Barnes to let us run all year but the old man won’t do it till this week.”
None of Barnes’ team at Tennessee have ever consistently push the pace. Every single year Barnes has been at UT it’s been the same thing. Preseason comes around and Barnes says “I want to push the pace.” They don’t push the pace. They do for a few games later in the year. Then in postseason plays he slows them down again.
I remember Barnes getting on Bone for not pushing the ball. I think it depends on who he has driving the bus. He wants fast play and scoring opportunities in transition but not if the pace is out of control. I doubt that he ever wants anybody to slow down if they are ready to run. He doesn’t want forced shots.
I don’t think they’d go out of their way to mention that Barnes has been trying to get them to play like this all year and that they’ve been too focused on trying to always run a play rather than run. Both guys mentioned it without really being baited into answering that way, they easily could’ve answered differently. You thing two freshmen who are well reported to be great guys are gonna throw a 30 year head coach under the bus? “Look we’ve been telling Barnes to let us run all year but the old man won’t do it till this week.”

I agree. He certainly wasn't spectacular but was active and solid. He scored four points on two shots, had four assists and 8 rebounds. There are gonna be games that we need him to contribute offensively but in that game it wasn't needed and he played his role.I thought Fulk played well even though he didn’t get many points against GA

Not sure why those things are mutually exclusive.I think it's a calculated, personality/values thing which typically results in a trade-off.
So Barnes would rather have players who are unselfish and eager to learn--but have to be admonished to push the ball and take their shots--than to have the more usual 5-star players who have to be admonished to listen, learn, slow down, and pass the ball.
Cal's coaching specialty is the latter. I'm glad we have Barnes, and I prefer to be supporting his kind of players.
