Just saw he was on one of those Sunday morning talk shows... resorting to mudslinging and personal attacks on Rudy (probably understandable) and Mike Huckabee (Huckabee seems to be an honest man).

Time for him to step aside. He's starting to get desperate and throwing haymakers. Just hasn't gotten any traction, partially due to his hubris and belief that he would be the GOP sheriff riding into town on the white horse.

That and he doesn't come off as terribly intelligent, whether or not you consider W. an intelligent man, I think most of the country doesn't. This election may come down to the most articulate candidate.

Fred Thompson acts like a guy who hasn't been involved in politics in a few years

Hillary would never carry the South, and no presidential candidate will ever win without the south and the MALE VOTE...thats the reality

If it is Giuliani v. Clinton the entire South may stay home. It's going to be awesome when Bloomberg carries Tennessee because I am the only one who bothers to show up at the polls.

Well, I don't know about all of that. I know there are some media people whispering about Nixon calling him dumb or whatever. But I just think the guy has shown arrogance since Day One, expecting his name recognition to carry him, then thinking he was the GOP Messiah in a weak field, and thirdly, assuming that the previous 2 would allow him to get lazy on the campaign trail. I mean, outside of today, has this guy really done anything in the media or anything worthy of grabbing headlines since he announced he was running?

Well, I don't know about all of that. I know there are some media people whispering about Nixon calling him dumb or whatever.

Good find and true:

In this May 1973 recording, he shared his concern with then-chief of staff Alexander Haig.
"He's talking to Fred Thompson. I said you're not --," Haig begins.
"Oh sh--, he's dumb as hell. Fred Thompson," Nixon interjects. "Who is he? He won't say anything."
In another conversation some weeks later, Nixon and his advisers were still describing Thompson as not very smart but at least beginning to play ball.
"Our approach is now, we've got a pretty good rapport with Fred Thompson. He came through fine for us this morning," White House counsel Fred Buzhardt says on a tape from June 6.
"He isn't very smart, is he?" Nixon asks.
"Not extremely so, but --," Buzhardt says, interrupted by the president.
"But he's friendly," Nixon says.
"But he's, he's friendly," Buzhardt echoes.
"Good."

That's harsh. I'm not a Thompson supporter, but I couldn't care less what Nixon's opinion of him was, either.

Was that Nixon's opinion or was it partly Thompson's reputation? That was my question when I read it. I doubt Nixon knew him well enough to form much of an opinion, but probably knew his reputation.

I never was a Nixon fan, but I do think he was a smart guy. I like this quote from Nixon "Why do I want it done? Because I told you so." No doubt who was in charge when he was in the White House.

I'm not a Thompson guy, either. But it just seems as though this is a way for the media to create a buzz by running out this story and spreading the talking points to everyone that will bite on it.

Fred's campaign has been the biggest bust so far of anyones.

He was supposed to come in and liven things up and has fallen dead as could be

Valid questions as to whether this was Nixon's opinion or general opinions of those he listened to. You're probably right in that Nixon likely didn't know him personally very well, so this could have been the opinion of others.

I was basing my comments regarding his intelligence on hearing him speak. I am not saying that he is not an intelligent man, I am only saying that he doesn't come off as the most intelligent of the candidates.

Well... yeah. People with a Southern accent don't sound intelligent. :ermm:

I think that accusation is a bit of a reach.

Why do you have me defending Fred Thompson?

I know what you're saying. I feel almost the same way. I, too, worry a little that his "dumb" reputation could have just stemmed from his accent. It wouldn't be the first time. But, I'm hopeful that there was something more to it.

Well the expectation from his supporters was that he'd be Reagan incarnate. That is problem number one. Too many people are trying to dig up the Gipper (actually both of them) and run him again. He's dead people. Find someone better. Find someone different. Stop living in the past and hoping someone can duplicate him.

Fred didn't live up to expectations. Half of his supporters have bolted and the other half are still delusional that Fred's still the man. They harp on the one scripted response video he did to counter Michael Moore. Any Hollywood actor could have done that.

It's looking more like Giuliani and Mitt are going to tear each other up. The door is slowly openning up for a potential Huck or McCain to sneak back in here.

I think with either just a little bit of money or a big moment in a debate either of those guys could grab the conservative spotlight and run with it.

I think it's funny how Fred is now trashing Fox News for supposedly being biased against him. Did he not see the past 6 months of H&C? Hannity about curled his toes up and smoked a cigarette after each Fred appearance.

But that is as far as it goes. He has little money to go outside of the first few states. And the fiscal conservatives are rabidly trying to cut him down.
