CNN is giving an initial report that the McCain campaign wants to suspend campaigning and postpone the debate to work on the economy, asks Obama campaign to do the same.

Probably a good move from a strategic sense. It will force Obama to make the same decision. It will also put Obama in a place he's not all that familiar with, the halls of Congress, where he's only spent 145 days in the last 4 years.

McCain's statement he just gave is about the most Presidential I've seen him look. This in part is a stunt, but it does show some leadership on the issue.

You guys don't think if it was an international crisis we were trying to immediately deal with McCain wouldn't jump at the chance to debate Obama on this in front of 100 Million people?

by doing this he can illuminate the point that obama has never actually done anything in the senate.

If it was a crisis that required congressmen and women to be there I hope every last one of them would be. If his position as congressman had some bearing on the situation my answer is yes, he would be there.

If it was something that he could not help with in congress I don't think he would be there, wouldn't be any need for it.

McCain isn't afraid of debating Obama, if that's what you're wanting to imply. Like the toned down first night of the RNC because of Hurricane Gustav, this is just another example of McCain's leadership experience.

If everyone is expecting McCain to show some leadership on the banking crisis don't hold your breathe.

it's true his recent populist rhetoric isn't endearing himself to conservatives. If you're referring to the Keating 5, McCain's role in that was dismissed as minor and irrelevant.

Too late! He has already done just that by putting off the debate to do his duty by being present in congress.

How do you hold your breathe anyway?

i think mccain is sincere about this and not seeing it as a political stunt. it wouldn't hurt though. i wonder what hussein obama is going to do.

To be fair, of course we McCain supporters are proud of him for this. Stunt or no stunt.

While I agree with you, that's a far cry from the rhetoric that was flying around here during the primaries.

It's funny to see the praise for this pure political move. If I were Obama I would say lets debate, what's there to study for, we should know our answers and what's an hour or two out of one day? It's not like McCain is working on this for 24 hours a day every day, he can find a couple of hours to hold a debate. Not sure where the debate is at but they could move it to Washington if this is that important.

Those that really care about the current situation would study every possible aspect, every possible solution and every possible outcome of the task they are about to undertake. I expect it would take a lot more of ones time than you think.

You can't be serious.

I think he sees it as both a way to show the American people he has their best interest at heart and is going to do what his current job requires.

Not to mention it will force Obama to make some kind of move as well, more or less making him look like a follower.

Further update....Foxnews is now saying the Obama campaign has not made a formal reply to McCain's proposal, but a campaign spokesperson did say that they called McCain's campaign this morning around 8:30 to see if he would be interested in releasing a joint statement with Obama showing where the two agreed in principle and that this needs to be taken care of in a bipartisan fashion. McCain called Obama back and said he agreed. Now McCain is upping the ante and calling for a suspension of campaigning.....

Looks like this may turn into an argument of who called who first, who had the idea.....we'll see how it develops.

Anyway, come on guys....you can't tell me if socialist Obama did this you would be all over it that he didn't know what he was talking about with the economy and wanted to divert the issue. If Obama was the one that said he "didn't understand the economy", if he was the one that was against regulation, then for it, then against it again, you wouldn't be all over him.

This was a political decision if you ask me. McCain has taken serious hits in the polls since this crisis came to pass. Latest polls show the economy is the top issue by more than 4 to 1. It also shows Obama is trusted more to handle the economy by 10 percentage points and the related issue of taxes by 7 points.

I do believe at least part of the decision is political. It just makes sense as the right thing to do now.

this was pathetic politics and nothing else. Neither of them has anything worthwhile to add to the debate.

I agree, if Obama called first or McCain, it doesn't matter. I have a problem with both of them on this. They are just getting in the way for show. Let the experts handle Wall St. and let these guys run for President.
