If you think the University needs athletics then you sir are ignorant. Thing is you can't separate the two simply to justify your point when they are interrelated. The two are not standalone entities. If the school was shut down today and no longer existed there would be no UT football. If the football team is given the death sentence by NCAA the school would lose revenue but would still stand. Unless all Tennesseans stop paying taxes your tax argument doesn't hold water. You do know there are schools without football teams right. There are no college football teams without a college. :acute:

This statement right here is the moronic thinking that has poisoned my University.

If football gets the death penalty, UT turns into a Pellissippi St. satellite campus.

I assume by your opening sentence that you don't think academics needs athletics. I agree. The academic side should stand on its own. So why are you and the professor protesting about the loss of revenue from athletics. You don't need it afterall.

Former UT faculty leaders speak on loss of $18 million in academic gifts from athletics

keep in mind...most learning instutitions have sports of all kinds, swimming, volleyball, tennis, golf etc..the major revenue sports are football and basketball...if you lose those you might as well get rid of the other sports because they are funded by mostly the football revenue...

So basically you agree with me that the school would still stand. Thanks. Point proven.

Where do you see me protesting this loss of revenue? Only thing I said was that nobody should be upset that athletics give to academics since that is who started up the athletics.

look up how much money the city of knoxville brings in from athletics ,not just the school . the whole town runs off of sports not the other way around .

That has nothing to do with my point that the school would still stand. I said there would be lose of revenue. Two different arguments. I totally agree that losing football would hurt the city of Knoxville. If you lose the school though football would still be gone; if you lose football the school would still be there, that is my point.

Yes, the football team would not be there if there was no University, however, what you for some reason havent grasped is that it's in the University's best interest to have a money making athletic program. The AD has given the academic side a substantial amount of money and national attention over the years. Heck, a lot of people choose UT because they are familiar with what the athletic teams do. If the AD needs to withhold donating 6 mil a year for 3 years to continue bringing attention and revenue to the University then so be it.

I AM a graduate of the U of T. And if the University wants to stop getting money from ticket sales, memorabilia sales, concession sales, etc, then they can keep their 6 mil a year. This is common sense.
